There Was, There Was Not Join us on Friday, September 6 at LOOK Cinemas for a screening of There Was, There Was Not, followed by a Q&A with director Emily Mkrtichian. AboutThere Was, There Was Not The first line of every Armenian fairy tale, There Was, There Was Not tells the collective myth of a homeland lost forever — and four women’s resistance to that loss. About Emily Mkrtichian Emily Mkrtichian is a filmmaker, multimedia artist, and interdisciplinary creative collaborator. Emily’s evolving artistic practice reflects her upbringing in a displaced, diasporic family, and centers the decolonized narratives of women, especially from the SWANA region, and a deep commitment to the healing power of relational, ethical, collaborative storytelling. Her films include the sci-fi short Transmission, which premiered at BFI FLARE Film Festival, the short documentary Motherland, which premiered at the Full Frame Film Festival and won the Best Short Documentary Award at the Copenhagen International Film Festival, and the upcoming feature documentary film, There Was, There Was Not, which has been supported by the Sundance Institute, the IDA, Chicken & Egg Pictures and HotDocs. Her multimedia Installation, Luys i Luso, made in collaboration with Tigran Hamasyan, has been exhibited in museums, concert halls, and public spaces around the world. Emily has been a Flaherty Seminar Fellow, a LA Public Arts Activation Fund recipient, A Locarno Film Festival Open Doors grant winner, a UnionDocs Summer Lab Fellow, a resident at the Yerevan Institute of Contemporary Art, and participated in the Torino Film Lab. She currently splits her time between the US and Armenia. Tickets and Seating Proceeds from our events go toward Armenian Film Society for the development of our programs. Please note that reserved seating is not available for this event. Your ticket ensures access to the event, but there will not be an assigned row or seat. This event will be first-come, first-served seating. Parking Validated parking is available at the Exchange Parking Garage, across LOOK Cinemas, on 115 North Artsakh Avenue for $1 for 4 hours with validation. About Armenian Film Festival Founded in 2015 by husband and wife Armen and Mary Karaoghlanian, Armenian Film Society champions Armenian films and unites Armenian filmmakers. Armenian Film Society has had partnerships with American Cinematheque, Vidiots, and the Academy Museum, and has hosted events with guests including Atom Egoyan, Howard Kazanjian, Joe Manganiello, Mardik Martin, and Sev Ohanian.
