When we booked a room on May 17, the employee told us we needed to pay the €5 tax in cash. I didn't understand why we had to use cash, so the employee implied cash was required by the government, but I'm pretty sure the hotel was just trying to avoid paying a card service fee. When we returned to check in, employee Periklis Samaras took my suitcase from me without me asking. I had rolled my heavy suitcase using the extended telescoping handle. Periklis picked up my heavy suitcase from this handle instead of by the secure handle meant for lifting. The telescoping handle broke. I politely informed Periklis, and he became very defensive and kept accusing me of "making trouble." I asked to speak to a manager, but Periklis refused. Periklis eventually called the manager Ron Ben David, who was actually the owner. Ron offered to meet me later, but did not provide a time, so we left the hotel to eat. Ron messaged me at 6:37 PM, "When will you be back in the hotel to discuss?" I responded three minutes later at 6:40 PM, "I'll be back in a few minutes." Ron did not wait, so we had to sit in the hotel for an hour for him to return. Ron wanted to discuss what happened in front of the employee who broke my suitcase. I thought that was rude and uncomfortable, so I asked if we could talk in a different location. Ron did not apologize for the employee breaking my suitcase. In fact, Ron kept saying my suitcase was already broken even though it wasn't. Ron also kept saying he wanted to make things right, but kept offering us a room upgrade, which I already declined because it did not "make things right" because I was now stuck with a broken suitcase for the remaining two weeks of our trip. Ron said he was limited in what he could offer. I was confused since he was the owner. He then admitted that they were self-imposed limits. I said the suitcase had cost a few hundred dollars, but Ron didn't believe me, and even started inspecting my suitcase! The whole time, Ron was just talking like an insincere, condescending salesman. Ron obviously had no intention of "making things right," so we left the hotel. While walking out, Periklis said something like, "Thanks for choosing Casa Porto." I had to carry a 28-pound suitcase while traveling around Crete for two more weeks and then through three airports to return home.
