Pacific Resort Aitutaki is unbelievably nice. It would be nice on Maui or on another Hawaiian island. But how they manage to pull off this level of niceness on an island with a permanent population of less than 2000 is beyond me. It's hard to know where to begin. The rooms are large with beautiful covered patios facing the beach. The sliding doors beachside have locks. So you can exit your room in that direction too, and lock it up. There's a short staircase to the sand from your patio, and a beach shower at the bottom. The beach itself is very pretty and faces directly west so you get some gorgeous sunsets over the water. The lagoon in front of the resort is pretty shallow. I'm not sure it's really swimmable at low tide. But we did a little snorkeling in it. Be careful not to kick the coral if you go snorkeling. There are kayaks and stand up paddle boards near the bar side of the beach which you can just grab. There's also snorkeling gear in a little cabinet. Up at the main drive there's a bike shed. The public spaces are centered around a free form infinity pool that looks out over the ocean and a small outcropping of lava rock. Immediately next to the pool is a bar that also severs lunch. Up the steps you'll find Reception and the main restaurant, Rapea Bay. Tables are arranged on tiers and the whole place is open air. The food is what you'd expect at this level of resort. Breakfasts are included but they're not the typical resort buffet breakfasts. You oder off the menu and the dishes are prepared. The rooms have a small bar area adjacent to the bathroom and there's a small refrigerator in the cabinet below. Purified water is provided by the housekeeping staff -- something like 2 X 1 liter of room temperature water and 2 X 500ml in the refrigerator. Beach towels are in the closet. There's also a small beach bag in there too. My son really liked the beach bag, so I asked at the front desk where I could purchase one. They said "they're yours to keep." Ok, it's true this place is a little pricey by Cook Islands standards. But if this resort was on Maui it would be at least twice as expensive, you wouldn't get a cooked to order breakfast, and you'd be handing out tips to everyone. If you just want to relax and have all the amenities of a luxury resort, go here. If you're planning to do an Aitutaki lagoon cruise and stay over a couple nights, as we did, come here. You'll feel like you've been away a week. If you're looking for night life or shopping, don't go to Aitutaki. If fact, if that's what you want you're probably better off skipping the Cook Islands completely and going to Hawaii instead.
