Bowood Hotel Spa & Golf Resort

Spent a day at Bowood yesterday. Started at the House & Gardens. The House & Gardens were immaculate and visiting the walled gardens was a wonderful experience. We then went to a high tea, which was our first high tea at Bowood. We were welcomed with a smile and excellent service. Great views of the golf course and grounds. The high tea included scones, sweet treats and sandwiches, we also had the choice of tea, coffee or soft drinks. Overall, it was a splendid day out with my mother and a very memorable experience. I booked a spa package for my birthday with my teenage daughter. Having previously stayed at Bowood House and had a lovely experience I thought that this would be a lovely treat for us. On arriving at the Spa we were told that the cream tea would be in the Shelburne Restaurant in the hotel after our treatments and not in the Spa bar. This was not a problem and we had a lovely afternoon in the Spa, the treatments were good, however, please note if you are under 18 a responsible adult needs to be present during your treatment - this is not stated on the website we were placed in a couples massage room and I got to chill on a spare massage bed but it was not ideal. After our treatments had been concluded and we were showered and dressed off we went to the restaurant. This is when our experience started on a downward spiral. The French maitre’d was quick to correct me when I said we had a booking for an afternoon tea (my mistake) as I should have said cream tea and he made my mistake quite clear, not a good start. We were seated and our drinks order taken. My daughter had a soft drink and I ordered tea. After a wait the soft drink arrived and a pot of tea, no cup and saucer, no sugar or milk. I thought - they’ll bring the necessary accompaniments shortly. I was wrong. So I eventually caught the attention of one of the blonde waitresses who were flouncing about who then brought a cup and saucer and placed it in front of my daughter, no milk and sugar, so I had to ask for these, from another blonde waitress. Again these were placed on the table nowhere near me. I then realised I had no teaspoon and had to inconvenience the employees yet again. Their attitude was superior and could definitely benefit from some customer service training as we were clearly an inconvenience to them. 30 minutes after being seated and with my tea cooling rapidly there was no sign of our scones but we counted three afternoon platters and another hot meal being served. We asked twice when our scones were likely to be served and when they did eventually appeared they were delicious. However, there was no spoon for the jam and to be honest I really did not want to engage with the staff again as we were clearly an inconvenience. A hugely disappointing experience on my birthday as it was made quite clear we shouldn’t have been in the restaurant but in the Spa Bar!

Table of 12, come for breakfast. They were too busy to accomodate us in their dining or breakfast room they we had breakfast at The Club house. Our waiter was from Southafrica, shame he was not trained or did not know what to do. We chose to have breakfast at Bowood as our family come all the way from Australia. Well, I could have choose a Calne center cafe and that would have been better. Only served coffee from a press and English tea, no cappuccino or similar. Too busy for that I presume. We booked the day before for nothing, the table wasnt set and we had to help the dude to set our table for breakfast. WEe ordered full engkish, the tomatoes were not cooked and we got offered only a stale cheap quality brown bread (probabli from tesco or other supermarkets). I was so embarrassed as we received our breakfast after 45 45-minute wait. No more, sorry I was expecting premium service especially coz of the size of our table.

Previously did girls spa break and enjoyed so much I brought the family back for golf and spa weekend. Was brilliant and can’t wait to come back!

8 Of us stayed Sat to Sunday for 2 rounds and an overnight stay. The hotel, staff and food are fantastic. Great service by all the team. The golf course condition was not great, not worth £100 a round. The fairways have been scarified and drill seeded so we played preferred lies and the bunkers have a mixture of sand and also far too much sand in them.

Mrs Duds and I had a two-night dine and stay break in the spacious room 225 overlooking the Academy Course and could not fault a single element of our stay - from the round on the PGA Championship golf course, the massage in the elegant spa or the food choices and quality at dinner and breakfast. But what really made the stay special was the service from every member of staff - reception, bar, dinner, breakfast, pro shop and spa. They were all exceptional and could not do more to make our stay memorable. We’ll be back!
