Derwent House

The many things I liked (not necessarily in order): 1. The best coffee in Africa! Finally after 2 weeks in Africa, I’m served real coffee- not instant! 2. The view of table mountain from the room. 3. The made-to order breakfast. 4. Comfortable & quiet rooms. 5. Location. A safe walk to many restaurants. 6. The art! There are so many paintings, sculptures, etc. interior design is fun to look at. 7 the staff is super friendly and accommodating. I would return.

For a boutique hotel, Derwent House is absolute perfection. The rooms are decorated in a way that personalizes each one separately. We stayed for a week and not only did our room feel like home to us but so too did the rest of the house, which was also decorated with a designers eye. On a rainy day we sat by the fire and drank Gin from the honesty bar, which was a nice touch. The pool area, including hot tub, were very clean and comfortable. Breakfast each morning was nicely done, with many options, and something we looked forward to each day. They even offered up a new special each day, which was a nice touch. Kloof street is nearby and there are so many great restaurants to choose from, like The Black Sheep and Miller’s Thumb just to name a couple. Sea Point and Camps Bay are also a quick uber drive away. Overall, the location was perfect. It really was the people managing the house that made it so special. Everyone was so very nice and helpful. Luka was fantastic to chat with and always willing to help us out. We travel a lot and we’ve stayed in some very high-end places, but The Derwent House is easily one of my favourites. I highly recommend it!

Common areas invite lingering—especially the sun-drenched pool area where afternoons seem to stretch deliciously longer than anywhere else in Cape Town. Breakfast deserves special mention—hot, flaky croissants and made-to-order dishes that showcase both skill and imagination. After a day exploring the city, return to sample South African wines from their well-curated honesty bar—a perfect education in local vintages without the drive to wine country. Yet what elevates Derwent House to extraordinary is unquestionably its people. Tash greets you with the warmth of an old friend. Gladys, Patience, and Bohym anticipate needs you didn't know you had. Simon's attention to detail transforms ordinary moments into memorable ones. And Luca, managing it all with effortless grace, offers insider recommendations that transform your Cape Town experience from tourist-standard to deeply personal. Each morning begins with personalized suggestions for the day's adventures. Each evening concludes with the feeling you've returned not to accommodation, but to a place that, however briefly, feels like home. In a world of cookie-cutter luxury and impersonal service, Derwent House offers something far more valuable—connection. This is the rare find that seasoned travelers hope for but seldom discover: a place that enhances your understanding of a destination while providing sanctuary from which to explore it. If I ever return to Cape Town it will be to Derwent House—not as a guest, but as someone coming home.

Could not fault this place. Safe area and an easy Uber trip to the tourist sights. The room was comfortable and quiet with views to Table Mountain. The breakfast was impressive with a nice selection and daily specials. They have a selection of wines and gin in the evening that you can enjoy in the living area. Outstanding place to stay, deserving of the stellar reviews on this site. Rooms are cosy and well appointed and the breakfast choice is great. The afternoon tea/cakes are superb - freshly made on site. What sets it apart is the level of personalised service from the whole front desk team, from local tips to tourist advice. Done with a genuine warmth and brilliantly led by Luca. Derwent House is a safe 5-7 mins walk from all the great restaurants on Kloof Street - you MUST dine at Asoka and Kloof Street House. Uber is everywhere and easy to hail and this hotel is just 10 mins ride from the V&A Waterfront a similar time to Camps Bay beach. Table Mountain cable car entry point is 5 mins taxi ride away. You'll struggle to spend $3 on a one-way ride. Cape Town is simply amazing - and this should be your place to stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. The staff could not be more helpful. We loved the welcome drink and the tour of this beautiful house. Our room was clean and super comfortable. Hot showers, blow dryer, espresso maker and 2 balcony’s were appreciated. We also loved the buffet breakfast and hot breakfast options available every morning. There was also wine, beer, gin and tonics and snacks available all the time with the honor system. This hotel is also just a 3 minute walk to Kloof street where there are plenty of nice restaurants, bars and cafes. Secure parking is also available. We can’t thank the staff enough for making our stay so comfortable.
