Château Saint Gilles

My wife and I feel we need some superlatives to describe this place. We booked in for 3 nights, en route to the ferry at Ouistreham, after visiting family in Brittany. We wanted to see the nearby Bayeux tapestry (and did - amazing) and also have a few days of rest and relaxation. On approach, the building is impressive, handsome, set in extensive gardens, of blossom and mature trees. We received a warm welcome, and our luggage was portered to our rooms. Our suite was wonderful, tastefully furnished rooms of good proportions, with large comfortable bed. In fact, a bedroom, a sitting room, an internal hallway, bathroom and separate toilet, all with air con. The grounds comprised several acres, a mix of lawns, flower beds, woodland and greenhouse. There is an area with wooden equipment for keep-fit enthusiasts. The outdoor pool proved to be beautifully warm, and there is a sauna, jacuzzi, and similar. The staff were faultless - professional, engaging but not intrusive, and friendly. The restaurant menu covered beef, fish, chicken and vegetarian, and there were salads, burgers, etc. If staying more than 3 or 4 nights, or if one has dislike of various dishes, this menu might be somewhat limiting. But the food was excellent. Tasty. Building work to extend the restaurant area and accommodation (I believe) was not too intrusive, and almost complete. This chateau is a quality establishment. My wife and I would like to return again, for a night or two, or if the menu was more extensive, or changed from night to night, for longer. We wholeheartedly recommend Chateau Saint-Gilles.

Our stay here was perfect. Our room was gorgeous, we had dinner one night in the restaurant which was delicious and there is a great buffet breakfast with everything you could want. Our room overlooked the beatiful garden when we watched red squirrels. The hotel is just outside Bayeux and they organised taxis for us so that we could go into town one evening and all have a drink. What could have made it better? I would have liked an early morning swim but the pool didn’t open until 10 and we were out for the day by then.

It feels so nice to wake up to such a tranquil setting. The whole place is fabulous for relaxation. Staff are super friendly. Breakfast are full of local produce. We had a fabulous stay.
