This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip I had looked forward to for a long time. Wanting to make unforgettable memories with my girlfriend, I booked a suite room with a half-board (breakfast and dinner) plan and gladly paid the premium for it. I expected a quiet, comfortable stay and the attentive service of a high-end ryokan. Instead, the breakfast service and the way the problem was handled afterward badly let those expectations down.
I woke up at 7 a.m. looking forward to breakfast in a private dining room. But the hot pot was served with no broth at all while the flame was already lit. As a result, the ingredients began to burn, and the private room filled with a strong burnt smell. As you can see in the photo, the food was clearly burnt.
At first, I accepted that mistakes can happen. The real problem was what came next. When I told the staff the food seemed burnt and asked if it was okay, they took the dish away — but instead of replacing the burnt ingredients, they simply added broth to the same burnt food and brought it back. Serving burnt food again to a paying guest by just pouring broth over it is, frankly, hard to understand.
I was staying in a suite room on a plan that included breakfast and dinner, at a rate well above room-only. Yet I couldn’t eat the breakfast with any confidence and had to start my morning hungry, frustrated, and disappointed.
The issue wasn’t only that the food was burnt. It was that the hot pot was served without broth, that no one noticed until the room was full of smoke, and that even after I pointed it out, the same burnt food was served again without being replaced.
Suite room or not, this falls short of basic service for any guest. Beyond the facilities or the atmosphere, this level of breakfast service and problem-handling is not what I would expect from a high-end ryokan. What saddens me most is that a special morning I had waited so long for was ruined this way. I’m leaving this honest review so the same thing doesn’t happen to other guests.
