Either this hotel has been hit hard by COVID, or there has been inconsistent upkeep since its opening in 2005. I am not sure which. The exterior needs a new coat of paint. The ponds no longer operate. The gardens are overgrown; the popular stone path labyrinth path surrounding a boulder in the backyard is almost entirely buried under grass. The room was clean enough but needed a deep clean. There was dirt on the wall trim, the shower curtain, etc. All the running water was a very light brown, but they may be using well water. A disclaimer somewhere about that would have been nice. We did not see any staff the entire time other than at the contactless check in, which was very brief and consisted of one person pointing us to our rooms. The library and game room were both dark. I found some light switches and looked around, but couldn’t help but feel that I was intruding. I found a man sleeping on the couch in the game room in the dark and promptly left. The library itself was beautiful. Although there were some history, classics, and childrens books available, the vast majority of works were on physics, self-help, spiritualism, and the paranormal. The dining services are still closed. They offer a breakfast voucher to the nearby Dean’s Den (which is a wonderful establishment) but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The only other restaurants are almost half an hour away in Marlinton, so visitors are left with little in the way of food options. The lack of Wi-Fi and cell reception didn’t bother me too much; that probably can be considered a perk actually. However, things just felt a little too quiet and empty here. It would make a great setting for a horror movie.
