I mean, the place is alright. Nice design on the houses (we stayed in house no. 1) and the staff are friendly and attentive. There’s a lack of amenities here so it’s more like sharing a house rather than being at a resort/hotel – you won’t find a gym or swimming pool, etc. not much to do in the area besides eat and walk around. 1-2 nights is enough.
The room rate itself isn’t terrible but the restaurant on site is VERY expensive and they will charge you for absolutely everything that they can including extra breakfast items that you’ll surely need because the free breakfast is a tiny amount of food.
They’ll also charge you for late checkout, which they will ask for a full room rate for with a 30% discount even if you only want to check out 1 hour later… we found that to be a bit cheeky.
Try the unique cheese fondue place in the area. Interesting and great in the cold weather.
Shishi-Iwa House is a beautifully designed retreat that perfectly blends architecture with nature. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful, making it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle. Every detail of the design feels intentional, creating a truly relaxing and inspiring stay. Highly recommended for those seeking tranquility and aesthetic beauty!

We couldn’t fault this stay. The buildings are some of the most incredible architecture you will ever see. The eye for detail from the staff was next level. Anything we asked, was no trouble at all. Their recommendations were perfect. The meal we had was exceptional (coming from a chef), and so were the sake pairings…again, and the service. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. The genuine care the staff had for us, was something we have rarely experienced.

With stunning architecture by Shigeru Ban (who designed House 1 and 2), this stylish small hotel has interesting spaces filled with contemporary art. My family took 3 rooms in Villa A of House 2 which gave us a private kitchenette and small seating area, with access to a beautiful communal room and library. It's a couple of minutes' walk to House 1 with the gorgeous restaurant that merges the indoor with outdoor. The restaurant offers a good breakfast and a la carte lunches/dinners. We chose the omakase dinner one evening and it was creative and excellent. The staff members are fantastic - friendly and helpful, especially the knowledgeable and wonderful General Manager Ogihara-san who went out of his way to personally take us to the oldest ramen restaurant in Karuizawa and the volcano park. We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel recently added House 3 which is also stunning. There's quite a bit to do in the area - hikes, waterfall, onsen etc., so we are already planning our next trip. A great escape in the summer from the blazing heat of Tokyo, and I hear it's amazing in the snowy winter too.
