We stayed in cabins that were slab huts, country themed for three nights. You could even see some spaces to outside in the slabs. Quite unique really, harking back to the early pioneer settlers. It was very comfortable with all mod cons if a tad cold at night for two of the nights when the aircon heating went off. It is not in the town but close and walking distance to the two main attractions of Longreach: the Qantas Museum and the Stockman's Hall of Fame. It is only about a twenty minute walk into town along the Botanic Walkway. We had breakfast at the Qantas Museum twice. It could be a little problematic if you hadn't hired a car but the taxi service is good, although there is only one in town and we called it twice. Otherwise the Retreat will pick you up from the station and drop you back to the airport or train. We ate twice in town and this Tavern had a courtesy bus to pick you up and take you home (a drawcard for them). So the distance of the Retreat without your own transport is manageable. The drawcard for this accommodation was the three bathtubs at the back where you could soak in a hot bath of artesian water even if the temperature was cold outside. They were very popular. Our group enjoyed them very much on several occasions. The management were very friendly, helpful and informative.
