The Inn at Mattei's Tavern

The hotel property is incredibly designed and maintained. Staff couldn’t go above and beyond any more! The Lavendar Barn spa is one of the best we’ve had the pleasure to enjoy and you feel completely revitalized after a stay at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern. Vegan options extremely limited, but the kitchen will accommodate the best they can.

Let me preface this review with a little background. This claims to be a 5 star facility, and we are not 5 star people. It is extremely rare for my wife and I to splurge like this, but It was a special occasion for my wife. I feel it is important as a point of reference for this review. The stay did not start off well, but the overall experience was fine. We arrived at the beautiful, quaint facility a bit early. Check-in was at 4pm (most hotels are 3pm but no big deal). We arrived at 2:00, checked in and were told that they had upgraded our room (bonus!) but we had to wait until 4:00 and we could use the facilites and hang at the pool (no problem). At 4:20, I had not yet recieved notification about the room, so I called the front desk. I was told it was not ready and I would get a text every 15 minutes to update me (great!) 4:45 nothing, 5:00 nothing, 5:15 nothing (never got a call/text). We had dinner reservations elsewhere at 6:00 and a musical to attend afterwards. We needed our room to shower and get ready for our evening. 5:20 went back over to the front desk and asked about the room. 1st girl said it was not ready but let me contact a manager for you. She was gone for 10 minutes then another girl asked if she could help. I explained to her the situation and she said the room was ready. I would have hoped our first impression of this 5 star facility would have included more common courtesy and respect for time. My understanding was that there were a few other guests waiting for their rooms as well. Most of the rest of the stay was nice. The staff around the grounds were great. The wait staff at the restaurant was understaffed and seemed a bit stressed out, but the food was delicious. The pool area was nice, the upgraded room was beautiful and clean (with a fire pit). Did a great yoga class. The spa area was great (this coming from a non-spa person). The only other issue we had was a package had been delived for us while we were there and it would have been nice if the front desk had delivered it to our room or contacted us to let us know it was there. I had to go to the front desk and have them track it down. Overall I would say it was a rough start that ended well (3.75 stars). I would hope that if I were to ever come back, the experience would be 5-stars.

Our stay at The Inn at Mattei's Tavern was an absolute disaster from start to finish, turning what was supposed to be a luxurious getaway into a frustrating, filthy ordeal that sent us packing within hours. For $4,400, we booked a two-bedroom suite, expecting top-tier service and accommodations. Instead, we got incompetence, miscommunication, and a room so disgusting we couldn’t stomach staying. The trouble started before we even arrived. I called en route to confirm details about the dedicated poolside cabana included with our suite, as advertised on their website. Virginia, the first staff member I spoke with, had no clue what I was talking about. I had to read the website verbatim to her before she reluctantly agreed. She then transferred me to Hannah at the front desk, who was equally clueless. I read the website to her too, and only then did she acknowledge the cabana. How does a “luxury” hotel have staff completely unaware of their own amenities? The room was also supposed to come with a dedicated Mercedez Benz, as per the website, not 1 mention about the Mercedes by any of the staff members upon check in. We arrived early at 1:00 PM, only to be told our room wasn’t ready but would be by 4:00 PM at the latest. They directed us to the cabana to spend the day by the pool, which was the one thing that went as expected. But by 4:30 PM, we hadn’t received a single call or update about our room. I had to get out of the pool, dry off, get dressed, and march to the front desk, where I learned the room had been ready for who-knows-how-long. Why promise to notify us and then drop the ball? It’s basic hospitality. The real horror show began when we finally got to the room. Within 15 minutes, my son noticed the bottoms of his feet were completely black. We checked ours—same thing. Every single one of us had filthy, coal-black soles from walking on the hardwood floors. Upon inspection, it was clear these floors hadn’t been cleaned in months. They weren’t just dirty; they were gritty, like sandpaper, with more traction than a hiking trail. Clean hardwood is supposed to be smooth, not a health hazard. It was so bad we couldn’t walk to bed without our feet getting filthy again. Shower, step out, dirty again—rinse and repeat. Disgusting doesn’t even begin to cover it. I called the front desk to complain, and they sent the maintenance manager, who had the audacity to insist the floors “do get cleaned.” Really? Then why were all our feet black? Sweeping isn’t enough—hardwood needs mopping, and clearly, they’re cutting corners. His empty assurances did nothing to address the grime we were standing in. At that point, I started wondering what other shortcuts this place was taking. If they can’t clean a floor, what’s happening in the kitchen or with the bedding? I wasn’t about to stick around to find out. This place calls itself a luxury hotel, but that’s as laughable as calling Pergo faux-wood flooring “hardwood.” It’s a facade. We checked out immediately,

Exceptional stay, highest level of attentive service, elegant Farmhouse chic decor. The food was stellar in all venues, even poolside; the green salad with broiled salmon was simple but perfect, and would have been high quality in any restaurant.

The rooms are beautiful and the beds are very comfortable. The outside fireplace was a wonderful place to sit and read at night and enjoy the night air. There are also fire pits throughout the property. Check in was easy and amenities were great, we look forward to staying here again!
