I was looking for a family-friendly room with sweeping views of the lake and boy did I find it! I won’t post too many pics of our room because it was exactly (but better) than what’s on the hotel’s website. We were coming from one of the finest hotels in Antigua, but we all preferred Tekoa! Daniel (and the owner-family) could not have been warmer and more attentive to our needs. A happy accident: when I was looking for accommodation at Lake Atitlan, it was hard to get an idea of which of the dozen villages would suit our vibe (party vs. yoga retreat vs. bigger city, etc.) so I just picked San Antonio Palopo because I liked the room. I assumed we would hop on the public boat transportation system to explore some of the other villages. So I was initially concerned when we arrived to discover that San Antonio is actually pretty isolated from the other villages. But that’s what made it so cool! It’s effectively off the tourist map (doesn’t even have an ATM), so it’s extremely traditional, with literally every woman in traditional dress. That could feel a little limiting if you plan to stay more than a few nights, but Tekoa’s restaurant is excellent and we even had very good pizza delivered from around the corner. The hotel feels like a family (hi Daniel!) and they perfectly organized a private boat to explore the lake, a day-trip to Chichicastenango with driver and *excellent* English speaking guide (hi Lucio and Elizar!) and transportation back to Guatemala City.
