This was our last stop in a road trip between Portugal and Spain. As we left the main road a fearful feeling came over us! It was like “where are we going?”. It seemed it was taking us to nowhere. But, we are glad we chose this place. It’s beautiful and peaceful! It’s is surreal to be so close to a 1700/1800’s house. I hope this beauty finds its way into the future.

Ocho personas de mas de 70 años. Muy mal tiempo. Pedimos algo de comer a las siete de la tarde para no tener que salir con tan mal tiempo. Imposible!!!!!! We spent two nights In Santiago de Compostela during our mini road trip across Spain with our little dog and chose the Casa Grande do Bachao, located about 20 - 25 minutes’ drive from the centre of the old city. It sounded like a great alternative to the usual hustle and bustle of a city centre hotel and our choice could not have been better as this place is a haven of tranquillity and relaxation, especially after a long hot day of driving. Casa Grande do Bachao is a cluster of old monastery buildings which have been beautifully modernised to provide a most charming and relaxing retreat with many original features tastefully incorporated. It is set in rolling countryside, surrounded by dense woodland and the Tambre river which can be reached easily for a leisurely stroll. The atmosphere throughout the property is calm and welcoming with a handful of individual rooms and common areas to relax in. Our dog-friendly room was beautifully appointed and very comfortable although lacked air conditioning, whereas some other rooms appeared to have it. A delicious Spanish style buffet breakfast is provided and we also took up the option of the evening meal which is a fixed menu with meat and fish being served at 9.30pm on alternate nights. There is also a choice of reasonably priced wines available. The property owner, Javier who is an excellent chef, prepares the dinner and afterwards, makes a point of chatting to each guest in the dining room. There is a lovely sitting area with tranquil views, an ideal setting for a pre-dinner drink from the self-service honesty bar. This property is a hidden jewel and we have no hesitation in recommending it. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return.

We absolutely love this hotel. We first visited in 2014 and have dreamed of returning, having had to cancel in 2020 and 2021 owing to Covid. We were delighted to finally return in 2023 to find it was just as good as we remembered, it is an absolute gem. The place is beautiful, the staff are friendly but relaxed, the little touches like the honesty bar and pool are really welcome, and in general we love the feeling of luxurious escape but without pretension. Also importantly, the breakfast and dinner are absolutely delicious every time. Thank you for this truly wonderful place, we hope to return sooner next time!!!

We found and booked the hotel through ***********. The hotel is like a hidden gem in the local mountains. Great breakfast and dinner. Good outdoor pool. We got a room in the roof structure without an air conditioner, so it was not very pleasant to stay there when it was +30 outside during the day. At night, you could sleep by opening all the windows. Rather weak wi-fi internet and no mobile communication zone, but maybe you don't need it either?
