Recently stayed at Cliveden which has been a bucket list venue for some time and sadly it didn't meet expectations. We had paid around £1100 per night bed and breakfast so expected everything to be impeccable at that price. The grounds and setting are fabulous and the house has a real sense of grandeur, the room was large and spotlessly clean / well maintained, but still a bit underwhelming at this price point. Overall the hotel lacks the attentiveness/attention to detail you can reasonably expect at this pricepoint. - the bar is very small and on the first evening we couldn't get a seat so sat in the Great Hall - an impressive space but lacking in atmosphere. There is a wonderful outdoor terrace outside the bar but no seating out there - probably because the National Trust don't allow it (there is a small outdoor seating terrace on the first floor but no service up there from the bar and this area felt a bit down at heel). Service was slow in the bar on both occasions we went. - breakfast service was painfully slow both days and we had to flag staff down to get a drink order in, and the buffet element of the offer was standard hotel fare like i've seen in many a business hotel. The hot food ordered was again pretty ordinary, and we had to send my wife's poached eggs back as they arrived literally stone cold. -dinner the first evening in the Astor grill was solid, if a little expensive for burger type fare - we cancelled our reservation at the main hotel restaurant after our first night's stay as we were already feeling like expectations weren't being met and likely wouldn't be again with dinner so we booked instead to dine outside the hotel, as there are many many excellent restaurants within a few miles radius e.g. Fat Duck, Hinds Head, Waterside Inn in nearly Bray. - several erroneous charges on our bill at checkout that were removed, but poor form that they were on there in the first place and required an uncomfortable conversation to query and request be removed. So we've ticked it off the bucket list now. Cliveden House National Trust is well worth a visit to see the house setting and the grounds but we wouldn't return to stay in the hotel - can't comment on afternoon tea as we didnt take it. We've stayed previously at The Four Seasons Hampshire and The Grove which were both far better hotel guest experiences in the vicinity and for considerably less cost, and the Four Seasons particularly is just as convenient for Windsor.
