The Alverton

This was our 5th short break to the Alverton, this time to include my wife’s birthday. We always book a garden room and have been lucky to always get the same room The Alverton welcome club is a great way to start your break. I also arranged for flowers for my wife birthday and whilst not cheap the display was fantastic. Also the hotel gave us a bottle of wine to celebrate with. The staff here go out of their way to make your stay comfortable with breakfast and dinner an exceptional standard. I cannot complete this review without making a special mention to the superb service from Eden our waiter each day whose friendly attitude and communication skills were second to none. It fair to say all the staff here are fantastic. Looking forward to our next visit

We celebrated a small family wedding here and it was perfect. The staff went above and beyond and took a very helpful, proactive approach. We stayed in a family room/suite and were impressed. The room and bathroom were both sizeable, and it was good to have a separate shower and bath tub. The room was well furnished with extremely comfortable beds. Some nice touches included a fan and some yummy home-made Cornish shortbread! I particularly enjoyed sitting on the terrace admiring the beautiful garden. In the morning, I was delighted to find breakfast was à la carte style, instead of the usual luke-warm buffet style you often find in hotels. The breakfast itself was FANTASTIC! High quality ingredients, a great variety of options for eggs etc and definitely one of the best I’ve had.

Tge Alverton always delivers. Beautiful hotel which blends old charm traditional service with modern menus and comfortable, spacious rooms. The staff seem to stay which is testament to the owners and are always attentive and charming

Family event held at The Alverton in The Great Hall. Excellent food. Beautiful space. Staff were excellent setting up visual and sound tech. Couldn’t fault it. Staff in the bar were lovely!! Big thanks to Patrick and Charlotte who were our event supervisors and were friendly and attentive throughout the event. Nothing was too much to ask of them.

It’s hard to imagine such a place is a mere stone’s throw from a city centre. In what looked like former monastic buildings up a steep hill with rooms in an annexe even higher still it feels more like a country retreat than a city hotel albeit Truro is small for a city. Its grand halls are doubtless ideal for wedding receptions. The restaurant has a number of adjoining rooms attached to a lively bar and occasionally advertises lobster feasts on the lawn outside. My supper comprised a more prosaic peach and goats’ cheese salad followed by a substantial skate wing and broccoli before a plate of Cornish cheese. Thus refreshed I had a comfortable night’s sleep before a hearty breakfast after which a taxi was found to transport me to the courthouse where my client despite coming from down the road rather than myself from London arrived late.

Dreadful Lobster on the lawn was the worst experience I’ve had in years. Service was no existent, waiter did know the menu and has to go and ask out questions on return he still struggling to explain it . He clearly didn’t understand it . Food was terrible. Half a small I can only guess Canadian frozen one . Cut into pieces and served in a broken half shell. Chips cold and stuck together. Some kind of cheap potato dish with in a spicy chorizo like sauce with drops on cheep mayonnaise. Raw sea bass with small cubes of tasteless orange and a few bits of chill And a bowl of green mix leaf salad with not dressing. Chef clear has no idea of taste combination or care . He should be shamed of himself. All came in little plates and bowls that didn’t fit into our tiny table . I had to take one of the dish in my hand while the waiter tried to make room only to be left with it and no where to put it down. Only 13 table eating and you can see why . Totally cheep produce , poor service and at £50 per ticket we left feeling totally ripped off . I would rather pay double and get a decent meal and even .
