We stayed 2 nights here primarily to break our return journey from the eastern Kavango region to Windhoek and to experience their white rhinos on foot. The main building dates back to 1895 and green lawns and stately palms are enclosed by a low stone wall. With its location in the Otavi mountains, Ghaub is peaceful and away from it all with amazing sunsets, sunrises and night skies. We had 2 large rooms with a terrace – spacious and comfortable. Staff were friendly and the chef produced some excellent desserts. My husband, adult son and daughter did the morning walk to the rhinos. The guide offered to take them to the other rhinos about 12km away as well, but the group declined because it was getting hot. I’d planned to walk, but had an upset stomach from malaria pills, and chose the afternoon drive instead. The vegetation was a mixture of thorn bushes and then opened up onto a grassy plain where we saw springbok, red hartebees, zebras, bush buck, and a dikdik, not to mention a group of rhinos. The guide told us we could get out and approach them, keeping a distance, since they are accustomed to people and would have walked up to us. The different groups of rhinos are protected around the clock by ONE Namibia (they also protect the rhinos at Waterberg). We saw the night guard take over from the day guard as he completed his shift. Fabulous experience. There is nothing quite like seeing a rhino in the wild to truly appreciate it, especially the more gentle white rhinos. Our guide drove us across the reserve to see the other rhinos as well and once again we were able to leave the vehicle and approach them on foot. We can highly recommend this encounter and appreciate that revenue from these tours go to support the rhino patrol. Recommend at least 2 nights at Ghaub.
