Stayed for just the one night, but had a lovely time. All the staff we encountered from check in though bar staff and wait staff at breakfast the next morning were all very friendly and did their job well. The room we had gave us the absolute best view of the massively impressive cathedral. Big bed, comfortable and provided a good night sleep. The bathroom contained a bath with shower over the top and shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I’m not a great fan of twiddling the hot and cold taps to get the right temperature as I tend to over react to too much heat or cold, but I guess that is just me…. The room had a small wardrobe and plenty of drawer space as well as a TV and coffee machine. It was well proportioned. The hotel didn’t seem to be too busy and certainly wasn’t noisy. The bar on the ground floor was nice. A couple of cocktails were had, although no Guinness was a let down (no delivery rather than none available). Breakfast was self serve, but really good. Traditional English fare including black pudding, but also cereals, some continental offering as well. A number of other reviews mentioned difficulty in getting into the car park. Yes, it’s a little tight, but not a problem. Plenty of parking spaces. Outside the front there is a patio terrace to have a few drinks and gaze at the cathedral. Really nice. As for location, Wells isn’t exactly the largest ‘city’ so to say this hotel was central wouldn’t be a lie. Then again, to say pretty much anything is central wouldn’t be telling a lie. Had a nice time. Would go back. Parts of the decor probably needed updating in the hotel but it didn’t put us off. Nice.

We stayed for 2 nights and ate in both nights. The room was well equipped but could have been cleaner. Food was variable with some tasty dishes and some not so good. We might come back because of the location but would look carefully at alternatives first. Car parking is a problem but not much could be done about that.

Arrived for 2 days in May, receptionist very welcoming. We had asked for a ground floor room and were booked into The Lodge. Room very comfortable, and warm. Tea and coffee provided also iron and ironing board. Shower was amazing. We dined in the restaurant, staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Food was first class. They also had an extensive wine list, of which the staff were able to make recommendations. Breakfast was served in the dining room, once again food and service was first class.

We recently stayed at the Swan Hotel to attend a family funeral in Wells. First impressions were good albeit quite nerve-wracking trying to park. We informed the hotel in advance that we would be a late arrival and asked if there was a room service menu available. We have an email to confirm there was. We arrived at 9.30 pm, looking forward to grabbing a quick bite only to find out there was no room service. Luckily we managed to find a local restaurant still serving food. Our deluxe double room was very comfortable but very noisy from 7am as it is in a separate building The Coach House & is on the high street. Breakfast was OK, very poor continental selection & hot offering quite basic but tasty enough. No low fat milk available for tea or coffee. Staff very attentive & polite. A bit overpriced for what we got.

We really liked this hotel. It didn’t try to be anything it wasn’t. It’s old, therefore parts of it are a little tired. So what! It didn’t affect the service from the bar, reception and restaurant staff, who were all really good, very friendly and frankly “normal”, not false or plastic. Parking: we had a VW Golf, perfect size. Be warned, bigger vehicles will struggle getting through the narrow drive to the car park. Spaces are very limited and can’t be reserved. By midday on a Saturday, the car park was already more than half full. B&B booking with a 2 course dinner added. Be warned, we were presented with a different menu than the one online. The steak, duck and lamb meals were all removed..the ones we wanted. This was not explained or indicated at time of booking and not explained when we mentioned it. We only know because the people sat at an adjacent table who arrived after us were able to order those meals. Bit naughty to do that without explanation. Food: restaurant filled up nicely, everyone seemed happy with their meals. Food quality was good although homemade pork and cider pie contained more cider than pork. Had fish starter and salmon for breakfast…far too salty. Shocked the kitchen added any salt at all. Ruined those dishes. This is why the rating is marked at average.

A very homely and comfortable hotel. The central location is perfect for access to the shops, restaurants Cathedral and Bishops Palace. The terrace across the road was perfect for afternoon and evening drinks. There is limited parking access, which is explained when booking. We ended up parking in one of the public car parks about 400m away, paying about £10 per day. The staff are exceptional, with a particular shout out to Cathii, Elaine and David in the breakfast area. The breakfast choices are comprehensive and well presented. Our double room was very clean and well appointed.

Overall, this hotel is lovely and in a great location near the cathedral. The room was clean, albeit a little tired, and the facilities were good with kettle, coffee machine, and iron and ironing board. Four of us dined in the restaurant that evening with the meals being good, accept the burger which I can only say was incinerated and the wait for our food was unacceptable at well over an hour although our waiter did keep apologising. We were told that there would be roadworks on the Sunday and we were advised to move our cars, so I moved my car at 07:30 as these works were meant to start at 08:00. After parking Mr car at Waitrose at a cost of £6.50 we noticed a sign at the end of the road say the works would start on the 30th May, 3 days later. The hotel was good but certain things could be improved.

We enjoyed our one night stay here. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The meals were of good quality and Barbara, our waitress, was brilliant. Just one star off for a few minor concerns. Our classic room was clean and comfy but badly needed a refurb and two lights were not working. We had to wait quite a while for our evening meal, as a party of sixteen arrived later, but the staff apologised profusely. All in all, a good central place to stay.

Hotel with long history. Pleasantly quirky in parts. Service excellent and room great, albeit bathroom up a flight of stairs. Well organised self-service breakfast with options for ordered items. Excellent view of the cathedral from the massive Cathedral View room.

Do not book this hotel if you want to sleep. We have booked this hotel for a lovely evening away, and to our surprise there was a wedding. Our room was located above the wedding disco, with music booming and shaking our bedroom floor & bed! We were not notified of this wedding (we would have booked elsewhere having been told this would be the case), and that the music stays on at full volume until 12. This was no fault of the wedding party, but the fault of the hotel. Extremely disappointed. If you want to sleep in the evening, do not risk booking this hotel. We were offered no other room/alternative. Surely using any logic, they would put the wedding guests above the extremely loud music so other hotel guests could stay elsewhere and be able to sleep! Felt like I was in a 1* all inclusive hotel in Benidorm with this ridiculous noise. Book elsewhere.

This is a lovely, old building with beautiful , original features. The staff on reception and at the bar are very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are well equipped, with toiletries and tea/ coffee making facilities. Plenty of storage space , ample power sockets and good lighting. Well placed tv, if that’s what you want. Unfortunately, the day we stayed , there was a wedding. The car park was full, so had to pay to park locally, there was a 3 hour maximum stay, so had to return to the car to park elsewhere. We were offered a breakfast slot , but only if we ate at 7 or 7:30, a little early for us on a day off, so declined. On returning to the hotel, the wedding reception was in full flow. We had received an email saying they do hold events which may result in “ some noise disturbance though we will always try and keep this to a minimum. ” Our room was booming. The music echoed & vibrated , shaking even our toilet, as well as our beds, in fact-everything. We spoke to reception, but all rooms were booked. We had to close our windows- and the room was so hot. This made no difference to the noise. ( it is a very old building and I understand that double glazing isn’t possible). There is a fan provided, but not alot of difference made. I woke up very sweaty and uncomfortable. Eventually, the music stopped, but then the light from the corridor came in through the door frame. The ‘stand by’ on the tv kept flashing green and red, I turned it off at the wall in the end. So not a good nights sleep at all. I truly believe that this is a lovely hotel, with alot of positives, but unfortunately for us, it was a huge , sleepless disappointment.

Fabulous hotel with a great location. Staff were all helpful, friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Food was amazing and would highly recommend a stay here. Room was clean, spacious and had a coffee machine as well as kettle and instant coffee.
