Special Moments of Winter Travel in Sapporo & Otaru

The winter in Sapporo and Otaru was as beautiful as a scene from a fairy tale. In Sapporo, walking through the snow-covered Odori Park, we could admire the fantastic snow sculptures of the Sapporo Snow Festival. The cityscape covered in white snow was truly romantic, and a bowl of warm miso ramen felt even more special in the cold weather. In Otaru, the most memorable moment was walking along the canal. The canal illuminated by soft lights on a winter night was incredibly romantic, and the snow-covered streets looked like a scene from a movie. Walking through the streets of Otaru, filled with small glass craft shops and music box stores, made time feel like it was passing slowly. The winter trip to Sapporo and Otaru left warm memories, and I wish to experience the beauty of this place once again.

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park

However, in Hokkaido, which is located at a high latitude, May is the season when the colorful spectacle unfolds. From early May to early June each year, the slopes of Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park are covered with a pink carpet of moss phlox, offering a visual impact as if pigments were scattered across the land. To enhance the enjoyment of visitors, Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park has set up numerous photogenic spots, such as the moss phlox cow flower field on the hillside, the peach-colored torii gates of the Sanzu Shrine, and the latticed cottage amidst the sea of moss phlox flowers. The limited-time night illumination adds a different, enchanting atmosphere. As Higashimokoto beef and related dairy products are also local specialties, the park offers a variety of ice creams, including moss phlox-flavored soft serve. The Ōta Jinja

It is a mountain sacred site with the oldest history in Hokkaido, and is said to have been founded during the reign of Kakichi (1441-1443) in a cave near the summit of Mt. Ota (485m above sea level), which towers over a cliff. In the past, the Ainu people living in this area called the mountain spirit ''Otakamoi" and worshiped it as the guardian deity of Ezochi. In 1453, Nobuhiro Takeda, the founder of the Matsumae domain, landed in the Ota area and saw the Ainu people praying towards the mountain, so he climbed the mountain himself and discovered that there was a spirit inside the cave. It is said that this belief began in 1454 when he gave the honorific title of 'Ota Daigongen" and spread the word to people widely.

It can be quite difficult to decide where to travel in Hokkaido, as it is vast and every region is attractive... So, let me introduce a model course for a 2-night, 3-day trip to Hokkaido that I actually enjoyed!! First, Day 1〜Furano〜 Arrival at Chitose Airport✈️ The first day is a trip to Furano! It takes about 2 hours by car or bus from the airport to Furano, or about 3 and a half hours by train. Hokkaido is large, so it inevitably takes time to travel, but as you get closer to Furano, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of nature, which is fun! Once you arrive in Furano, here are the recommended tourist spots. ○Furano Cheese Factory Located in a lush green forest, you can buy various types of fresh cheese made at the factory! There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy a cheese-filled pizza, so it's recommended to start with a meal here. There are terrace seats available, so dining surrounded by nature is recommended! There's also a cute cow photo spot. ○Shikisai no Oka Depending on the season, you can enjoy various plants here. The vast grounds and the vivid flower fields are very attractive! There are seasonal soft serves available, so take your time to walk around while enjoying one. When I visited, it was just before the lavender bloom, but I was able to see a beautiful flower called catmint, which is similar to lavender! ○Blue Pond This is a very famous tourist spot. The Blue Pond is very fantastical, and the contrast of blue and green in the background is definitely photogenic! There is a walkway around the pond, so try taking pictures from your favorite angle. Day 2 〜Sapporo〜 After fully enjoying the nature of Furano, let's return to Sapporo and enjoy the classic Hokkaido! The absolute must-visit tourist spots in Sapporo are as follows. ○Conveyor Belt Sushi True to its reputation as a seafood paradise, Hokkaido offers fresh and large sushi toppings at affordable prices at conveyor belt sushi restaurants! The great thing about conveyor belt sushi is that you can eat as much of your favorite types of sushi as you like. Day 3 〜Otaru〜 On the last day, move to Otaru near the sea and enjoy a different taste of good old Hokkaido. It takes minutes from Sapporo to Otaru by train. When you arrive at the station, take a short walk to the vicinity of the Otaru Canal. There are many shops near the canal, so let me introduce some recommendations! ○Seafood Bowl First, enjoy the bounty of the sea! There are many restaurants in Otaru where you can enjoy seafood bowls and grilled dishes. The seafood is fresh every day, so you can't miss the supreme bowl of Otaru! ○Otaru Art Village Stained Glass Museum After a good meal, visit the Stained Glass Museum to admire valuable art pieces. Displayed here are stained glass pieces produced in England from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, which actually adorned the windows of churches.
