History of Leshan Giant Buddha: In 713, a monk named Hai Tong decided to carve a Maitreya Buddha statue to watch over the river, a project that took 90 years, until 803, to fully complete. It houses a huge collection of Buddhist statues (over 3000) built into the forests and cliffs, some of which are directly carved into the cave rocks, resembling famous grottoes like those at Longmen or Dunhuang. Many people miss out on this place when visiting Leshan, not knowing there are thousands of impressive sculptures and statues, as well as a breathtaking 170-meter-long reclining Buddha - the world's largest sleeping Buddha!
