In 1883, 31-year-old Gaudí was appointed as the architect of the Sagrada Família. In the same year, brick manufacturer Manuel Vicens i Montaner planned to build a villa in the suburbs of Barcelona, and Gaudí took on the commission. For a young architect, it is hard to imagine a more luxurious debut. Casa Vicens stands in front of people with strong oriental colors like a fairy tale castle in One Thousand and One Nights. The highly decorative and complex facade makes the whole building look like a crystal cut into multiple facets. This Neo-Mudéjar style mansion is a representative work of Gaudí's early design. The smoking room is the most iconic room in Casa Vicens, with an area of only 10 square meters. In this small space, Gaudí condensed the romantic longing of the West for "Oriental style" in the 19th century through Islamic-style date palm plaster pendants (Mocárabe), bright geometric glass windows, and pulp bricks, creating a fantasy, brilliant, and luxurious Moorish world.
