Hakata Sumiyoshi Shrine: The Oldest Sumiyoshi Shrine with Over a Thousand Years of History

Sumiyoshi Shrines are scattered throughout Japan, but the oldest one is located in Hakata, Fukuoka, boasting a history of over 1800 years. It is considered one of the 'Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines' along with those in Osaka and Shimonoseki. The Hakata Sumiyoshi Shrine enshrines three deities: Sokotsutsuo-no-Mikoto, Nakatsutsuo-no-Mikoto, and Uwatsutsuo-no-Mikoto, who are believed to bring good fortune, ward off disasters, and ensure maritime safety. Sumiyoshi Shrine, along with Hakozaki Hachiman-gu, is regarded as one of the top shrines in Chikuzen Province. In addition to the three Sumiyoshi deities, it also enshrines Amaterasu Omikami and Empress Jingu. The shrine grounds feature eight smaller shrines, including the well-known Miketsu Ebisu Shrine, Sukunahikona Shrine, and Inari Shrine. It is said that touching different parts of the Ebisu statue of the Seven Lucky Gods within the shrine brings different blessings: face (family safety), belly (health), sea bream (business prosperity/luck), fishing rod (traffic safety/skill improvement). Touching all parts is believed to grant all blessings. Located in the city, Sumiyoshi Shrine is about a 15-minute walk from Hakata Station. Nearby is the beautiful Japanese garden Rakusuien, with an entrance fee of ¥100. You can also enjoy a cup of matcha at the tea house, making for a relaxing visit.
