Hong Kong Food Exploration | A Local's Recommended Chaozhou Treasure in a Historic Building

As a culinary capital, Hong Kong, China offers no shortage of Chaozhou cuisine options - from upscale "rich man's canteens" (easily costing thousands per person) to humble dai pai dongs. This time, I discovered the highly cost-effective "Chan Yee Hing Shang Chaozhou Restaurant", which has multiple branches. I visited their Prince Edward branch, famous for its historic architecture (just a 5-minute walk from MTR Exit B2). You can also choose their Hong Kong Island branch based on proximity. Reservations are recommended as this popular spot is always packed. When booking, they'll ask if you want to reserve handmade dishes - a must-try since these labor-intensive specialties aren't commonly available. We pre-ordered the "Steamed Golden Shrimp Dumplings" but later added "Lotus Leaf-Wrapped Braised Eel" and "Pomegranate-Shaped Crab Dumplings" (lucky last-minute additions as the chef had extras). Arriving at 6pm, we were seated upstairs with a view of Prince Edward's bustling streets. The friendly staff first served welcome tea (a Chaozhou dining tradition). The menu is encyclopedic! Our group of six started with the classic "Marinated Platter - Goose Six Treasures" (goose liver, feet, intestines, egg, meat, wings + tofu) - served hot, generously portioned, and perfectly seasoned. Next was the must-order "Shantou Oyster Omelette" - featuring plump oysters and crispy edges, delicious even without sauce. Of the three handmade dishes, the standout was definitely the "Lotus Leaf-Wrapped Braised Eel" - recalling my Shantou memories with its fatty eel infused with lotus fragrance in clear broth. The other two ("Stir-Fried Nan'ao Island Squid" and "Pork Knuckle in Plum Sauce") were good but less memorable. For greens, we had "Braised Mustard with Shiitake" (standard). The dessert paled in comparison to earlier dishes. Overall, I'm already planning return visits to try everything! Service was excellent - every staff member was warm and attentive. With reasonable prices, this place comes highly recommended!
