Stay at Sofitel Kunming and See the City's Intercity Line

Kunming, located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, boasts three major river systems: the Jinsha, Nanpan, and Red Rivers. Around 30,000 years ago, humans began inhabiting the Dianchi Lake area. From the Warring States period to the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Dian people around Dianchi Lake established the Dian Kingdom and created the Dian culture. Chu general Zhuang Jiao and his troops arrived in the Dianchi area, but because their return route was blocked by the Qin State, they remained and Zhuang Jiao became the King of Dian. Later, during the Western Han Dynasty, the Dianchi area was incorporated into the Central Plains. The Nanzhao Kingdom built Tuodong City, which was called Shanchan City during the Dali Kingdom period. Sofitel Kunming is located on Huancheng South Road in Xishan District, near Wuhua Sports Center. Each room has oversized floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Kunming. Facing south, guests can enjoy the sunrise in the east and the sunset over Dianchi Lake and Xishan Mountain in the west. The night view is also spectacular. This is my third visit to Kunming. My last stay was also at Sofitel Kunming, during which I mainly visited Xishan Scenic Area, Dragon Gate Grottoes, and Kunming Old Street. This time, I first checked in to InterContinental Kunming during the Lunar New Year holiday, which is the perfect season for gull watching. It was stunning. I strolled to Haigeng Dam by Dianchi Lake to see the magnificent Dianchi Lake, Xishan Mountain, and the seagulls from Siberia. I had planned to fly to Tengchong, but since I hadn't booked my flight in advance, I had to try to get a ticket on Trip.com. I ended up staying at the familiar Sofitel for three more nights. The hotel offers excellent value and allowed me to experience the festive atmosphere of Kunming. I also visited the Yunnan Provincial Museum, Yunnan Nationalities Village, and Guandu Ancient Town. Everything went smoothly, and I got my flight ticket as planned. What a wonderful time! I will definitely come back to Kunming if I have the chance.
