Exploring Mutrah Souq - A Cultural Gem in Muscat

#getgoing2025 As an Afghan traveler, I found the Mutrah Souq to be a fascinating blend of tradition and culture, much like the bazaars back home. It’s one of the oldest markets in the region, and its lively energy and historic charm instantly made me feel connected to the place. The souq is a labyrinth of small shops selling everything from frankincense to traditional Omani garments. I found myself drawn to the handcrafted silver jewelry and khanjars, which reminded me of the intricate designs of Afghan artisans. The friendly shopkeepers made the experience even more memorable—they were eager to share stories about their crafts and traditions. What I Bought: • A small box of frankincense, which reminded me of the scents often used in Afghan homes. • A traditional Omani cap (kumma) as a unique souvenir. • A woven scarf, perfect as a gift for family back home. What to Know Before You Go: • Similarities to Afghanistan: The bargaining culture is very similar, so don’t hesitate to negotiate politely. • Best Time to Visit: Evenings are perfect, as the souq comes alive with lights and activity. • Nearby Spot: After exploring, head to Mutrah Corniche for fresh seafood and tea by the water.
