Nagasaki Glover Garden

Nagasaki Glover Garden (グラバー園/Glover Garden) is one of the must-visit attractions in Nagasaki. Located on a hill in Minamiyamate, the garden is surrounded by lush greenery and offers breathtaking views of Nagasaki Port. It also preserves several Western-style buildings from the 19th century, giving visitors a sense of stepping back into Japan's early modern era influenced by Western culture. The most famous site in the garden is the "Old Glover Residence," built in 1863 by Scottish merchant Thomas Glover. This wooden Western-style house is the oldest of its kind in Japan and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. Mr. Glover played a significant role in Japan's modernization during the Meiji Restoration, contributing to the development of shipbuilding and mining industries, earning him the title "Pioneer of Japan's Modernization." In addition to the historic residences, the garden features observation decks, walking trails, and historical exhibitions. Seasonal flowers adorn the area, making it a pleasant place for a stroll.
