Red Beach (Κόκκινη Παραλία) was formed by a volcanic eruption in 1600 BC. After the volcanic ash and iron oxide were deposited, the red tuff cliffs and gravel we see today were formed. Red Beach is 100 meters long and 20 meters wide. The gravel and cliffs are iron red, which is in sharp contrast with the blue sea water. The water depth in this area is only 3 to 10 meters. The sea water is clear and suitable for snorkeling. However, the shore is full of reefs and there are very big waves. It is not suitable to go into the water here. It is safer to take a boat. The beach is covered with crimson seaweed, which is soft when stepped on, like a mattress. There are many caves on the cliff, called syrmata (σύρματα), with an area of ​​about 10 to 20 square meters. These caves are fishermen's boathouses, used to store small boats, fishing nets, oars and other fishing gear to protect them from wind, waves and sunlight. Sirmata originated from the 9th to 13th centuries. Due to the volcanic terrain of the island and frequent pirate attacks, fishermen dug caves to protect their boats.
