Sunlight Rock is one of the monuments on Gulangyu Island, and can immediately be seen as you approach the island by boat. It the tallest mountain on the island, and one can climb the steps to the top, to have a 360° view of Gulangyu and Xiamen. The setting is beautiful for photos, specifically at sunset. During weekends and public holidays, it may be a little bit crowded to go to the top, so I would suggest going early, to avoid the traffic. To get there, you would have to board a ferry at the Xiamen shipping wharf, to Gulangyu. Then you have to walk to the entrance gates of Sunlight rock (no cars on Gulangyu), using a map. One has to explore the island on foot. It has such a rich history and is also recognised as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The island used to be home to many foreign diplomats, and the architecture on the island has a strong European influence. Most of the historic building have been transformed into hotels or museums. The trees on the island are also quite fascinating. There are lots of great Chinese restaurants to eat at, but also Western take out restaurants like MacDonalds. It is easy to find valuable souvenirs, with shops around every scenic corner. From Guangzhou to Xiamen, you can take the high-speed train directly, and then take the bus directly to Zhongshan Street. There are many cheap and delicious things to eat in Zhongshan Street. You can go shopping in Zhongshan Street at night and buy many local specialties. You can have a good rest in the hotel for a night to recharge your energy (there are also many hotels). The Forbidden City (紫禁城 Zǐjìn chéng) was the residence of the imperial family during the last two Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its name comes from the fact that entry is prohibited for foreigners to the palace and its organization is like a small town. The architecture of the complex is impressive, but most of the valuable items such as paintings and porcelain were brought to Taiwan by Chiang Kai-shek (Jiǎng Jieshi in Mandarin) and displayed in the Taipei museum ((Taibei in Chinese) The Forbidden City is located north of downtown Beijing. It is towards the south and a small artificial hill, Coal Hill, is raised north of the Forbidden City to meet the demands of Chinese geomancy, Fengshui (literally wind and water). The Forbidden City is 960m long and 750m wide. The walls are from 7 to 10m high and the moat is 52m wide. During the occupation by the emperors of the last two dynasties for five centuries, no other building in Beijing could not exceed those of the Forbidden City. The Courtyard is paved with nearly 12 million bricks and the Forbidden City consists of about 9,000 rooms. The Forbidden City is also known as the Old Palace (故宫 Gùgōng) but rather refers to the central part of the Forbidden City without the passage between the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiān'ānmén) and the South Gate (Wǔmén). This was the Yongle emperor, who decided to move the capital from Nanjing to Beijing. Construction of the Forbidden City began in 1406 and lasted fourteen years, which is very fast for a building of this size. More than 200,000 craftsmen participated in the construction. Materials came from all over the empire: stone from Beijing, marble from Shanghai, wood from Yunnan and Sichuan provinces and bricks from Shandong. We took the ferry over to the island for a 1 nights stay. I really enjoyed walking around exploring the special walking pats and the special architecture. Xiamen is a cool coastal city in Fujian. Once a treaty port known to the world as Amoy, it retains much of the architecture from that time. The main attraction is Gulangyu, an island just off the coast which was a foreign concession where Europeans and Chinese who'd made fortunes abroad built comfortable villas. There is a short ferry crossing to Gulangyu directly from the Xiamen waterfront but it's only available to Xiamen residents. Tourists must go to the cruiseship terminal to take a significantly pricier and longer ferry. This is annoying, but it's still worth visiting the island.
