Madeira is an outlying island under the jurisdiction of Portugal. It is a holiday resort for people from European and American countries. There are not many Asians here (probably few of them have heard of this place). We got to know this place through a relative who is very good at tasting red wine. This is the birthplace of football star Cristiano Ronaldo. The red wine produced here is very famous. There is also sunshine and beaches, and the terrain structure is also natural. Since we are in Portugal, let's take a look at this place. I won’t talk about food in this article, because the food here is not particularly outstanding, and the seafood is no different from that in Lisbon, but the price is more expensive than in Lisbon. We took part in a local tour and hiked for four hours from the third peak, Pico Arieiro, to the first peak, Pico Ruivo. The runway of Madeira Airport is built on a hillside and is very short. Coupled with the strong crosswind, it is very difficult for aircraft to land. On the night of December 31st, as the world was gearing up to welcome the new year with fireworks and celebrations, I made a spontaneous decision—one fueled by a deep need for change. I booked a last-minute trip to Madeira, Portugal, escaping the relentless gloom of Dutch winter in search of something brighter, something different. I had just emerged from an intensely stressful period in my life, one that had left me mentally drained and physically exhausted. Sleep had become a luxury I could no longer afford, and an overwhelming sense of despair and anxiety had taken root in my daily existence. I felt trapped, as if I were running on empty with no way to recharge. But then, Madeira happened. From the moment I arrived, it was as if the island itself had conspired to heal me. The lush, emerald-green mountains rising from the deep blue Atlantic, the winding roads leading to breathtaking viewpoints, and the sheer scale of nature’s beauty made me feel small in the best way possible. Suddenly, the little storm that had been raging in my mind didn’t seem so significant anymore. It was as if Madeira whispered, Look at the world beyond your worries. Any taxi will take you and we just negotiated the rate, they will wait for you when you are ready to descend. At that altitude, the air is thin, and every breath feels like an effort—but the experience was nothing short of magical. It’s the kind of moment that stays with you. Madeira’s famous basket rides are the kind of quirky activity you won’t find anywhere else. After taking a scenic cable car ride up the hill, we hopped into a wicker basket on wheels (yes, really). Get ready as two strapping men pull you down the hills. Prepare for plenty of laughter and a few screams! One day we hired a local taxi driver and after negotiating a fixed day rate he took us to see Madeira’s famous black sand beach, several waterfalls and the islands natural pools. For the brave (or slightly crazy) there’s cliff diving in to the Atlantic Ocean. I gave it a go and although my technique left much to be desired, the trill was incredible.
