Embark on a journey to an island where nature and people harmonize — Oki Islands, Dōzen Area.
◾️What is the Dōzen Area?
The "Oki Islands" are located in the Sea of Japan. Among them, the Dōzen Area consists of three islands: Nishinoshima, Ama Town (Nakanoshima), and Chiburijima. These islands are close enough to travel between by ferry or high-speed boat. Each island has its own unique charm, offering a travel experience where you can immerse yourself in both nature and local life. 🚢
◾️Breathtaking natural beauty and stunning views 🌊
One of the iconic landscapes of the Dōzen Area is "Matengai Cliff" on Nishinoshima. Here, you can witness grazing cows and horses leisurely roaming atop towering cliffs, creating an extraordinary scene. On Chiburijima, the "Red Cliff" (Sekiheki) features striking crimson cliffs that form a magical view when paired with the setting sun. Ama Town offers tranquil fishing village scenery surrounded by crystal-clear seas and lush mountains. 🌾
◾️Experience "living tourism" through human connection
In the Dōzen Area, you can enjoy a journey that goes beyond sightseeing to truly experience local life. In Ama Town, you can try fishing activities or learn about the culture of island schooling. Nishinoshima offers unique experiences like bull sumo and fishing, while Chiburijima invites you to connect with warm-hearted locals in small villages. The islanders welcome visitors not as "guests" but as "companions," leaving you with a sense of warmth and healing. ☺️
◾️An island where nature and people coexist
The Oki Dōzen Area is a serene yet unforgettable destination where grand nature and human life harmonize. Explore all three islands and savor their individual charms on your "island journey." 🛳️
◾️Access
Ferry: Approximately 2–3 hours from Shichirui Port in Shimane Prefecture or Sakaiminato Port in Tottori Prefecture.
Airplane: You can also reach the Dōzen Area via Oki Airport (on Dōgo Island).
*Travel between the islands in the Dōzen Area is possible via high-speed boats or ferries.
[Nishinoshima] Sailing cafe
I went to Sailing Coffee, the only coffee shop on Nishinoshima, one of the Oki Islands in Shimane Prefecture.
You can enjoy not only coffee but also cakes and other sweets♪
The shop had a very relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.
The old pillars are still there in places, and the interior is stylish but somehow quaint.
Please visit when you go to Nishinoshima♪

[Nishinoshima] Tokugawa
I went to Nishinoshima, a remote island in Oki District, Shimane Prefecture!
It's about a 5-minute walk from the ferry terminal, and I went to a teppanyaki restaurant called Tokugawa.
The main dishes are teppanyaki, so they have okonomiyaki and monjayaki, but you can also get a cold shimame set meal that you can only get on the island. The prices are reasonable, too. If you go to Nishinoshima, please be sure to try it.

[Nishinoshima] Hotel Oki
I stayed at Hotel Oki, a hotel on Nishinoshima in the Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture.
The sea stretches out before your eyes.
Conveniently located just a 2-minute walk from Beppu Port!
You can also eat at the restaurant "Isoshiki" which is managed by the same company!!
If you visit Nishinoshima, please try staying here!

[Nishinoshima] Snack Asuka
I went to a restaurant called "Snack Bar Asuka" on Nishinoshima, an island in Oki District, Shimane Prefecture.
I ordered a set meal with local fish!
Everything was delicious! And the price was also reasonable!
The daily lunch "Wagatoko Set Meal" seems to change depending on the day!
If you go to Nishinoshima, please try it!

[Nishinoshima] Yakehi Shrine
I went to Yakohi Shrine, a shrine on Nishinoshima, an isolated island in Oki District, Shimane Prefecture.
Yakohi Shrine, located on the middle of a volcano (452m above sea level), is worshipped by sailors of the Sea of Japan as a god of maritime safety.
After a 20-30 minute hike, you can reach the shrine.
It's hard to describe in words, but it was an interesting shrine built into a cliff.
If you go to Nishinoshima, be sure to visit it.

[Nishinoshima] Matengai Cliff
We went to Matengai, a remote island in Nishinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture!
It is located on Nishinoshima, one of the Oki Islands, which is designated as both the Oki UNESCO Global Geopark and the Daisen-Oki National Park.
It is a huge cliff 257m above sea level that looks as if it was cut vertically with a giant knife, and is said to be one of the tallest cliffs in Japan formed by marine erosion!
In the surrounding pastures, you can see cows and horses leisurely grazing, and spend a relaxing time!

【Nishinoshima】Yurahi Goddess Shrine
I went to Yurahime Shrine on Nishinoshima, an island in the Oki Islands of Shimane Prefecture!
According to Shimane folklore, long ago, when Yurahime was crossing the sea in a potato barrel, a squid pulled (or bit) her hand, which was dipped in the sea. As an apology, squids began to swarm the beach in front of the shrine every year.
You can also see squid statues carved into stone.
Definitely go and check it out!

【Nishinoshima】Tsutenkyo Bridge
I went to see Tsutenkyo Bridge on Nishinoshima, a remote island in Shimane Prefecture.
Tstenkyo Bridge is a natural arch bridge created by nature, and is currently being eroded further.
When the arch falls, it becomes a detached rock.
In the past, it seems that you could pass under the arch by kayak, but now it is no longer possible to do so due to the erosion.
Like Matengai, it is also a geosite in the Oki UNESCO Global Geopark!
You can see and feel the wonder of nature. You can also see the ocean, and you will be overcome by the feeling that all your worries will disappear at once!
Please visit it once!

[Nishinoshima] Ikaaya
I went to Ikaaya, a library on Nishinoshima, a remote island in Shimane Prefecture!
The concept of the library is "Nishinoshima Everyone's Home," a living room that supports the lives of people on Nishinoshima!
It's not just a library, it also has a community space and a working space, and the inside is a really nice space.
The atmosphere was so good that I felt like staying there all day.
I wish I had a library as nice as this in my neighborhood.

I took the Dozen Ferry to travel from Nishinoshima to Nakanoshima, an island in Shimane Prefecture!

I got a panoramic view of the beautiful ocean!

[Nishinoshima] Matengai Promenade
I went to the Matengai Promenade in Nishinoshima Town, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture!
Matengai is the center of Kuniga, a steep cliff that rises vertically 257 meters above sea level.
The area above the cliff is a gentle terrain, covered with green grassland, where many horses and cows graze.
When you drive, you can see horses and cows walking on the road or relaxing in the grassland!
Tsutenkyo Bridge is a rock bridge created by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan, and you can feel the wonder of nature.
Please go and check it out!

I went to Oki Shuzo Ando Main Branch, located in Beppu Port on Nishinoshima, a remote island in Shimane Prefecture.
At Ando Main Branch, you can not only buy local sake and shochu, but also souvenirs such as sweets and miscellaneous goods!
It's right next to the ferry terminal, so please stop by!
