Best known for the glamorous film festival, this tiny seaside town in the French Riviera is one for a short getaway. There is not much to do or any different from other options on the French Riviera. But the film festival and its beaches, resorts, and the vibe certainly add a hint of elegance to it. Cannes has an amazing assortment of extraordinary restaurants. #timetotravel When in Cannes… of course I had to snap a picture with the big “Cannes” sign 🫶😍 The sign is up on a mini hill that overlooks Cannes which makes it the perfect viewpoint of the port of Cannes!!! It is free to visit the sign so I would definitely recommend. Next to the sign, you can find Château de la Castre (there is an entrance fee) and a little garden with is very picturesque and pretty. I believe there are two ways to get there: 1) Hike 2) By Bus Cannes is honestly not that massive so I did not bother exploring the transportation system and got around everywhere by foot. Here you will find all your favourite brands and more. During our visit, the streets were busy and all shops had outside pop-up stalls. For more local flavours, souvenirs and crafts try Meynadier Street. This street is really cute with colourful buildings, local shops and lots of tourists. Anything from pastry shops to clothing stores, you will see them all. Just wandeing around and enjoying the little streets of Cannes and visiting those cute souvenirs shop makes it worthwhile.

We didn’t have the time to go to the island but did see it from afar from the castle hill. This is where it took the Man in the Iron Mask 11 years to leave the tiny, forested St Marguerite Island. The mysterious individual was believed to be of noble blood, but his identity has never been proven. His cell can be visited in the Fort of St Marguerite, now renamed the Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea). This museum also houses discoveries from shipwrecks off the island, including Roman (1st century BC) and Saracen (10th century AD) ceramics.

We really enjoyed walking by the port and admiring the beautiful yachts. We thought we will see a lot of big and expensive yachts in Monaco, however we felt there were more and nicer boats in Cannes, so definitely pay a visit to the port. The port is beautiful and the views towards the city and old town are great. The yachts are absolutely stunning 😍 Take your time to admire them and enjoy your time around the port.

This is where the famous Cannes Film Festival happens and where all the movie stars come. The building itself looks modern yet slightly dated but definitely worth a photo. Here you will also see Casino Barriere Le Croisette. The building is situated by the Marina opening to a beautiful view towards the main boulevard and overseeing the old town in the background. There is a big statue of a camera nearby, so this might be a good photo opportunity 😀 Then you move on to explore the rest of Cannes

La Croisette is known for picturesque beaches, restaurants, cafés, boutiques and luxury hotels. Croisette beach Whilst you are on the promenade why not go on the Croisette beach and put your feet in the sand? Unlike Monaco and Nice, the beach here is really smooth almost like in Punta Cana. Really enjoyed walking around and enjoying the beautiful views. The sand is so fine and so nice to walk on. The water is clear but was rather cold in October. Overall a great experience alongside the promenade.

Make sure you visit before lunchtime as most of the market stalls disappear after lunch. Here they also sell fresh fish, seafood and oysters. The stands are beautifully presented with fresh produce and it is worth visiting even for 5 mins. You can see a lot of local people at the market as well. There are stands selling freshly squeezes juices and fruits, so you can easily refresh. You can enjoy some nice panoramic views of Cannes from there. The interior of the church has its own character and you can even find an old cemetery which dates back to the 16th century. Definitely a church worth visiting whilst in the city. What is also very impressive is the views from the church. You can see so many parts of Cannes from above, it is really beautiful and worth spending some time admiring the views.

You could enter the castle tower which has been converted to a museum showcasing landscape art, musical instruments and ethnographical items. We didn’t enter the museum however, we did take some time to gaze at the wonderful views from the viewing point. Below the viewing point you will also see the Cannes sign visible from the whole bay area. Many tourists choose to take their photos with the sign as well. You can check times and prices here. Once you are in Cannes you will find that the train station is conveniently situated at the forefront of most touristic areas. Although there is public transport in the form of buses mostly, we found that for exploring this city you can simply walk around. You also have options of using the pink electric bus, tourist train or hop on hop off bus. They have this cute pink bus which is tiny and takes you around the city. We didn't feel we needed to use public transport but If you are not into walking or too much walking, then this might be a good choice 😉

Transportation After arriving in Nice airport in the afternoon, I took tram to the Grand Arenas station( It is free from airport to Grand Arenas) and bought a 3-day south Azur pass for 37 euros. The pass the valid for all TER trains from along the line from Cannes, Nice and Menton as well as for bus and trams in Nice. The pass is highly economic for those who wish to travel to various towns by train from nice as each tour costs more than 10 euros. However, for visitors who only wish to stay in Nice, buying single tickets (1.7 euro each) would be sufficient as most spots in Nice are accessible on foot. Residence I stayed in Ozz hostel for a few days. The stat was better than expected as the 6-people room I slept in was quiet and the roommates showed respect to others in general. If there is something to improve, it is that the bed on the third decker was too high, and climbing up and down would pose some difficulties to even a young tourist. So far the staff are nice and willing to handle any concerns. Safety For my personal experience, it is much more safe in Nice than in Paris and Lyon. In general, the transportation is better maintained and the streets are free of garbage. Street wanderers are rare. They also offer set menus which are a convenient way to try their food. This is exactly what we opted for. Hristina had the mussels and I had oysters as a starter. They came beautifully presented and the oysters came on a boat like platter which was filled with ice. Very nice presentation indeed. For mains I had the salmon steak with mash potatoes and an almost ratatouille like garnish. Hristina had the seafood risotto which was creamy and full of seafood. Overall the food was delicious, presentation was amazing and the service was great. Would recommend!

Cannes is a great contender for a day trip if you find yourself on the French Riviera. You’ll be stunned by the views from the Castle Hill and be amazed by the truly blue French coast and lush yellow sands As you would imagine, local delicates are dishes with seafood and fish. Here, the Italian influence is a little less strong like in the likes of Nice and Monaco.

Once you arrive at the airport you are presented with a few convenient ways to make your way into the city. You can choose to head to your accommodation either by renting a car or simply hopping on public transport to Nice train station and getting a train.
