Reconnect with ancient heritage at Old China Block in Gubeikou
#beijingshopping
Stepping into Old China Block at Gubeikou seems like stepping back into ancient china. The well preserved ancient water town seems to be a time capsule reconnecting with our chinese roots. The stone buildings withstanding the test of time with the ancient waterways and bridges as a means to interconnect. And what's better, Simatai Great Wall in the distance as the backdrop of the picturesque town.

Exploring China's Ancient Water Towns
📌 Gubei Water Town, an Ancient Chinese Village
Traveling here is quite convenient—just a 140km drive north from Beijing, China 🇨🇳.
In January, the morning temperature is around -9°C, warming up slightly to -2°C later in the day (still very cold ❄). I wanted to try a boat ride to enjoy the scenery, but the river was frozen solid 😅 (If you want to go boating, it's better to visit during other seasons).
This is a beautiful destination not far from the capital, and it's not crowded either. You can take photos freely without worrying about other people in the background. Everywhere you look feels like a scene straight out of a Chinese movie. Plus, this town is located near the Simatai section of the Great Wall, making it easy to combine both into one trip—definitely worth it!
If you have time, consider staying overnight to fully soak in the atmosphere. The nighttime view of the Great Wall illuminated by lights, along with the decorative lights from the village shops, is a highlight you shouldn't miss.

4. Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October) are the best seasons for visiting Gubei Water Town as the weather is pleasant, and the scenery is at its best.

You CAN’T miss this in Beijing 👀
Are you planning to visit Beijing? If yes, then you must visit 2 of my favourite places 👇🏼
1- Simatai Great Wall of China. One of the seven wonders of the world and one of my favourite places. This part of the wall is the less crowded and the views are just stunning.
2- Gubei Water Town. Highly recommend to spend a full day there so you can also see the light show in the evening 🫰🏻
How to get there:
It’s easy- you can plan ahead and book a taxi( it’s a 2 hours drive from the city centre).
Ask the driver to take you to the Gubei Water Town and then you’ll walk to the entrance (around 10-20 mins walk). You can enjoy the views and the food in the meantime.
If you want a cheaper option- take the public bus at Dongzhimen Station in the centre of Beijing. ☺️
Also there are entrance fees applicable once you get there- check below 👇🏼
📍Address: Gubeikou Town, Miyun District, Beijing, China 北京市密云区古北口镇司马台长城
💰Average Price per Person:170 yuan ( water town and Great Wall ticket)

The Dreamy Gubei Water Town
Getting There - I took a trip with FCN/ Laowai, which provided me with bus transportation from Chaoyang Beijing to Gubei Water Town
Attractions - The whole town is an attraction. At 7 pm they have musical fountain show, but this is no ordinary fountain show. So, if you come here, make sure you watch it. During the day, they have a variety of traditional music performances, opera, etc.
Hotels - They have a resort and smaller hotels with varying level of service/amenities. I did not stay overnight my first time there, but I kinda regretted it. The hotels look so cute with fake-traditional
Food & Restaurants - There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and many many tea houses.#gubei #gubeiwatertown #traditionaltown #traditional #china #replica #chinatrip
Sunrise on the great wall.
I'm not a person who makes habit of getting up before the sun, but on this occasion, I've made an exception more than once. I must admit, I have rarely felt more at peace than I have when sitting on the wall as the sun comes up, and funnily enough, I didn't feel the need to return to sleep. If you are in Beijing, head up to Gubeikou and wake up early for the Great sunrise, then you can take a day trip to the Gubei water town from there.

Gubei Watertown - day trip out of Beijing
#urbanexplorer #daytrip #greatwall #gubeiwatertown
This water town by the foot of the Simatai section of the Great Wall is located in Miyun county. The town is surrounded by mountains, water and ancient style villages. This place has become more and more popular the recent years and we could feel that when walking around as there were a lot of people. The town is actually not that old but has been given characteristics as northern style architecture with history and culture of the late Qing dynasty. (1644-1911) the town is full of reconstructed buildings in courtyard style and hutong alleys.
We were recommended to be there at sunset so we opted to leave Dongzhimen at noon time and returned with the buss at nine in the evening. There are plenty of options to stay over night and I would like to do that next time.
Upon arrival you have to buy tickets to enter the gate and you will find signs for ticket office. In our entrance ticket we also got tickets for the Great Wall as well as the cable car to take you up.
Food - As we were starving when we arrived we found a place to eat by the river. Chinese home cooking style at a small restaurant where the owner also ran a bed and breakfast.
Local Liquor distillery - we had a quick look here, and it displays how they used to make their alcohol in the area.
Yongshun dye house - this is a good spot to take pictures with the different colors of the cloths hanging around. You can learn about cloth printing and dyeing here and even make your own prints into t shirts.
The last thing we did was taking the cable up to see the Great Wall at sunset. They run the cable during the evenings from 5:30 to until 22:00. We got a beautiful view and now I have seen a new part of the wall.
How to get there:
We simply took the bus from Dongzhimen. It was 49Rmb per person and we spent two hours to go there and one hour and 40 min to go back. This tourist bus from Dongzhimen leaves at 9:00, 12:00 and 15:30 and takes you all the way. Look for the bus: 古北水镇 Gubei Watertown. We paid after entering the bus. *They prefer cash but I think you may be able to pay with WeChat as well
A place to eat in Gubei Watertown!
Address - 威廉·埃德加精品酒店·西餐厅 You can type this address in Baidu map or just search the location I pinned in this post.
Ambiance/Facilities - The waiter/waitress are very friendly and accommodating though they don't speak English. They still assured us we get our orders right. If you're a foreigner who doesn't speak Chinese Baidu translator is a good help. It is a spacious restaurant. It has some tables indoors and outdoors. It has a nice view too especially if you're sitting outside.
Highlights - This is a 5 star hotel that has a restaurant. It's more in western style restaurant. I bet the rooms are nice here.
Avg. Price per Person - If you just eat I think 200-300CNY per person but if you stay in the hotel it should be 1000-1500CNY per night
Rating -4.5 for the restaurant

Watertown at Night!
Gubei Water Town is located on the northeast side of Miyun County in Beijing. This water town is about 2 hours drive from Beijing city. It is known for its northern architectural design and the culture and history of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China historic period. Majority of the buildings in the town have been reconstructed using the traditional courtyard design. This Watertown has grown from just 5 ancient villages and a water source into a renowned holiday destination. There are lots of food and gorgeous little shops to visit. Night view is exceptional. I highly recommend to be there at night. We had a fabulous experience.

Pretty Gubei Watertown outside Beijing
Gubei Watertown in Beijing's Miyun district is a little picturesque place where to spend a weekend out of the city.
There are many boutique hotels and local restaurants to try while wondering around aimlessly along the small canals and the quiet traditional alleys.
And don't forget to climb up the Great Wall before sunset to enjoy a beautiful views above the town! 🤩💕

Hilltop Catholic Church ⛪️
📍 Located in Gubei Water Town. It’s on the hill and there are many stairs and a bit tiring but totally worth it.
☕️ There is also a small coffee shop belonging to the church you can enjoy a cup of coffee and breath fresh air.
⛰ The atmosphere is great, clean and beautiful place. Very peaceful and breathtaking.
⛪️ Even if you are not religious it’s still an amazing place to be and to hold on a second and be in your head for a while.

In The Cloud Coffee ☕️👉🏻☁️
📍Gubei water town, Beijing.
🚖 We took a taxi from Huairou district around 75 minutes and around 300 RMB.
☕️ The menu was very tiny 😃 Just a few drinks and two cakes.
💰Sky high prices but it’s understandable because of the location and the view. The coffee was 58 RMB, cakes 38, 48 RMB.
⛰ It’s just a chill place to sit, enjoy morning tea or sunset 🌅 be taken by the view.

Gubei Water Town
Gubei Water Town is located on the northeast side of Miyun County in Beijing. It is about 140 kilometers from Beijing. Gubei Water Town was built at the foot of the Great Wall of China, under a section called Simatai, about 150 kilometers from Beijing. Previously, the Wall was "wild" here, but now this place has been turned into an expensive tourist resort.
The resort opened in 2014. Before that, in its place was a village in which people lived. To make room for a new ancient town, people decided to move: a few kilometers away they built a new village, completely consisting of identical houses.
The town combines the northern architectural style, the history of late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the Chinese cultures together. Most of the buildings are reconstructed according to the traditional Chinese courtyard style.
Gubei Water Town includes two main visiting areas, the Gubei Water Town and the Simatai Great Wall. Visitors can climb up the Great Wall to have the overall views of the whole water town. In the late afternoon, visitors can take the cable car up to the top of Simatai Great Wall.
The easiest way to get to Gubei Water Town is by taking a special bus from Dongzhimen Subway Station. It goes non-stop and a one-way trip will take about an hour and a half. This bus runs only three times a day, at 9:00, 11:00 and 15:00.

The beauty of Gubei Water Town📍
My boyfriend and I had a short trip to Miyun by motorcyle and we decided to make a stop at Gubei Water Town. I was amazed of the structure and architecture. You can see the ancient villages in this area. Many restaurants you can find around too. It is located on the Northeast side of Miyun County Beijing . It is about 140 kilometers from the Municipality of Beijing.

Gubei Water Town is a picturesque, ancient town located in Beijing's Miyun District, about 1.5-2 hours drive from the city center. It is a popular destination for both history lovers and those looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Beijing. Here's a complete guide for your visit:
1. Overview
Gubei Water Town is often called "the Venice of the North" due to its picturesque canals and traditional Chinese architecture. The town is set against the backdrop of the Simatai Great Wall, making it a perfect combination of historical and natural beauty.#gubeiwatertown
the most authentic section of Great Wall of China
Simatai Great Wall is the most authentic Great Wall where you can see collapsed sidewalls and bumpy ground.
It is situated at the same place as Gubei Water Town, so by going to Simatai Great Wall, you can enjoy Gubei Water town as well; can kill two birds with one stone 😀
If you are going to Gubei W town, can get the entrance ticket to Gubei W-town + Simatai Great Wall entrance ticket. Best of all, it has an optional cable car ride with an additional RMB200 for two ways, free for kids below 1.2 meters. With cable car ride, can reach tower 5 or tower 8 of Simatai Great Wall.
We visited Mutianyu Great Wall first hence coming to Simatai Great Wall after that is really an eye-opener.

Gubei Ancient City
It is a newly built ancient riverside town, but the town is very beautiful. It is not very big. You can go to the Simatai section of the Great Wall. This section is the only section that allows you to go up at night. If you want to go up, you should stay here. It is a pity that the leaves were wilted when I came. It is getting colder. If you come when the trees change color, it must be very good. We went in the middle of November. The temperature was around -1 to 5°C. It was very cold. When it was evening, my hands were shaking. LOL. There are hot springs in the town. It was very cold. Soaking was very relaxing. If anyone comes to visit Beijing, please stop by here. There are buses from the bus station twice a day. The first bus leaves at 12:00 and arrives in Beijing at 14:00-14:30.
The bus station is in Dongzhimen. It is a bit far from the subway. The bus leaves on time. Leave some time to walk.
We stayed at Matou, booked from a trip. The location is very good. It is near the drone show point. It is only 50 meters from the shuttle bus stop. It is very convenient. The room is clean. It is very good to book a room with a balcony. In the morning, ducks and geese come to wake you up. The food is delicious too 🥰🥰🥰
