🏮 Step Back in Time: Exploring the Charming Streets of Okage Yokocho in Ise
During our visit to Ise, we loved exploring Okage Yokocho, a charming traditional street just near the Ise Grand Shrine. Walking down the cobblestone paths lined with old wooden buildings and glowing red lanterns really made us feel like we had stepped back in time.
The street was filled with all kinds of shops selling local products, souvenirs, and delicious treats. We couldn’t resist trying the famous Akafuku mochi, a soft rice cake topped with sweet red bean paste—a true local favorite that’s been around for centuries. We also enjoyed some Ise udon and freshly made croquettes from a popular spot called Butasute.
Even though the street was lively with visitors, it still felt peaceful enough to take our time browsing and chatting with the friendly shopkeepers. We even joined a little workshop to make traditional moss balls (kokedama), which was a fun way to get hands-on with the culture.
If you’re visiting Ise, Okage Yokocho is a must-see. It’s a great place to shop, eat, and soak up the warm, historic atmosphere of the area. We really enjoyed every moment there.

Dōgo Onsen in the Rain – Covered Streets & Cozy Treats
#cityplaybook
Rainy days can be magical—especially in Dōgo Onsen. With covered arcades, charming shops, and the scent of onsen in the air, this historic hot spring town in Matsuyama is a joy to explore, no matter the weather.
The shopping arcade is full of local souvenir stores, from traditional crafts to modern favorites. One stop you can’t miss? The Rilakkuma shop—it’s full of adorable goods you’ll want to bring home, whether you’re a fan or just need a bit of cute in your day.
There are also plenty of cozy cafés. I grabbed a seat at Yukemuri Café and tried their freshly grilled dango—warm, sweet, and perfect for a rainy afternoon.
Even under gray skies, Dōgo Onsen glows with charm. And once you’re done wandering, there’s always a hot bath waiting.
Why I recommend Dōgo Onsen:
・The covered streets make it an ideal destination even when it rains
・Between the hot springs, sweet treats, and charming shops, there’s comfort at every corner

Akafuku and Okinawa, an unexpected combination! The journey begins with sweet happiness
#EnjoyJapan
My husband was excited when he found Akafuku at Centrair. We brought it on board... our destination was Okinawa! We were probably the only ones stuffing our mouths with Akafuku on the plane (lol). But the soft mochi and not-too-sweet bean paste are just the right way to start a trip. The contrast between Akafuku and the tropics is kind of addictive. How about giving Akafuku not just as a souvenir, but as a "travel companion"?
Basic information:
Sales location: Chubu Centrair International Airport, Terminal 1, 3F, souvenir shop "Meihinkan"
Business hours: 6:30-21:00 (varies by store)
Access: Directly connected to Meitetsu "Centrair International Airport Station"
English translation:
Spotted Akafuku at Centrair and my husband got way too excited. Of course, we brought it on board—destination: Okinawa! Pretty sure we were the only ones munching on traditional mochi sweets mid-flight. But honestly, that soft mochi and subtly sweet red bean paste hit just right before a beachy getaway. Who says Akafuku can't come on vacation too?

I received "Oba Castle Monaka" from a friend and tried it right away!
This Japanese sweet named after a castle was very sweet, with a fragrant crust and was delicious!
The inside was filled with smooth bean paste.
It was great to eat it slowly with tea.
It's great that local sweets have a sense of history in their names!
