Hands down the best vegetarian restaurant I’ve ever been to—and arguably the best Chinese meal I’ve had, period. This spot, Xiang Chun Gu Shi (Jing’an branch), absolutely blew us away with how they bring out the natural flavors of the vegetables in the most delicate, detailed way. One standout: corn with barley & beans, where each corn skin is peeled (!) and paired with barley & beans for a texture and taste I’ve never experienced before. Dong Tai Xiang - For when you’re in need of some no-fuss, classic Shanghainese bites, head here and order the Scallion Oil Noodles, the Peanut Sauce slathered Wontons, and, of course, the fluffy-topped, crispy-bottomed, juicy Sheng Jian Bao. 2. Lost Eatery - a classic haunt for when you’re craving some Yunnan style cuisine. Order the Crispy Beef with Pu’er Tea, the cold Yunnan Rice Noodle with Chicken Salad, the Braised Aubergine, and the Pan-Fried Dali Goat’s Cheese and thank me later. 3. 人和馆 - a fab choice for some Shanghainese classics in a super vintage-inspired venue with great service to boot. It gets pretty busy, so be sure to book your preferred location in advance. Oh, and get the Hong Shao Rou, Crabmeat with Rice, Shanghai-style Smoked Fish, and the Radish in Secret Sauce. 4. 香江姳苑 - My new favourite Hong Kong-style Cha Chaan Teng in Shanghai! Be prepared for a little wait, but when you dig into the Cheung Fun, Beef Brisket with Tendon, French Toast and Shrimp + Eggs over Rice and you’ll be happy. But if you’re familiar with a HK-style Hor Fun, I’d skip the one here. 5. Xibo - For Xinjiang-style flavours, Xibo is my go-to. From seasonal specials to province inspired drinks, you’re sure to find something you love. Need a little inspiration on what to order? Try the Slow-Roasted Lamb Leg, Fried Uygur Bread with Lamb, Big Plate Chicken, a Traditional Lamb Pilaf, and my personal favourite, the Liangpi (cold rice noodles in a chili vinegar dressing 🤤). 6. 山石榴 - Ever tried Guizhou-style cuisine? If not? Get yourself a table here asap!
