[Tokyo] Shinjuku Suwa Shrine, a 1200-year-old shrine in Shinjuku
Shinjuku Suwa Shrine is located in Takadanobaba, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. It is famous as one of the most powerful spots in Takadanobaba. Its history dates back to the Heian period, and it is one of the shrines that has been deeply involved in the transition of the eras from the Kamakura to the Edo period. The large torii gate facing the road is the landmark, and when you go through it, you will first see the chozuya (purification fountain) on your left! The sacred water flowing from the bamboo tube added by the dragon springs from within the grounds and is called the "sacred spring of Suwa." It is said to be beneficial for various illnesses, especially eye diseases... 👀 If you go further inside, the main shrine will appear! The contrast between the stately exterior, beautifully decorated with the chrysanthemum crest, and the calm colors was beautiful✨
I came to pray with a sense of determination🙏
To the left of the main hall, there is the "Miya Mikoshi Storehouse," which was built to resemble the national treasure Azekura storehouse at Toshodaiji Temple in Nara Prefecture,
and to the right is the "Kagura Hall," where songs and dances are performed to dedicate to the gods, and there are many other precious structures to see!
In addition, there are many interesting spots scattered around the grounds, such as "Mitake Shrine," one of the sub-shrines in the grounds, affectionately known as "Mitake-san," a small Inari shrine, and the "Kanjin Sanbashira no To," which has been designated a tangible folk cultural property of Shinjuku Ward! *The stone tower "Koshinto", which originated from Taoism introduced from China, has three monkeys carved on it, and since the monkey is likened to a monkey in the zodiac, it is said that monkeys are often carved on Koshinto🥸
There are several types of goshuin, both written and handwritten, and I was quite torn, but I fell in love with the design and chose one with Xuanwu, one of the four Chinese gods! 🐢
Compared to other goshuin, it was not a powerful and beautiful handwriting...
It was somewhat modern, but
it had its own unique flavor and was good😌
