It is located on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street, next to the Yarra River in the middle of the city, stretching from Swanston Street to Queen Street. Every weekday, about 110,000 people and 1,500 trains pass through the station. It is considered the oldest station in Australia and is famous in the world. Formerly known as Melbourne Terminus, Flinders Station was built in 1854. It was Australia's first steam train station, and on the day of its opening, it attracted a large crowd to see Queen Victoria and the first steam train running on the Sandridge (now Port of Melbourne) line on its opening day. In 1889, a £500 competition was held by the city council to design a new station, with two winners being J.V. Fawcett and H.P.C. Ashworth. After 5 years and a cost of £514,000, the new station in the style of Western architecture was completed. Since then, it has been a symbol and pride of Melbourne. Along Swanston Street, the old subway entrances and gates have been replaced by a pedestrian bridge at Elizabeth Street. When you set foot in Melbourne, the red brick building with yellow cream stucco, large dome and clock tower will quickly overwhelm you. The station has 13 stops, all managed by a computer system that shows the train times to the suburbs. All trains in and out of the city must pass through here. The original design of the clocks hanging above the main gate is still preserved to this day. Moreover, Flinders Railway Station is famous for the saying "see you under the clocks", referring to the 13 clocks located here. At first glance, the station looks old-fashioned from the outside, but inside it is very modern. Amazing Sunday trip from the capital. We took the high speed train from Beijing south station for 35 min. Upon arrival we found shared bikes and started our adventure. 🏫 we had a stop at Porcelain China House - 中国陶瓷屋. We just had a quick stop. 🏟️we then biked to five Great Avenues － 五大道 wodadao. Feels a bit like French concession in Shanghai. We found a cozy cafe here and had some ice coffee in the sun. 🫓 Food, we stoped by a local shop that had beef pancakes. Not exactly local food but a popular place amongst the locals for lunch. 🪭🏮Ancient Culture Street – 古文化街. We tried a local snack here called Shuligao, a specialty snack in Tianjin. cakes of ground hazelnut steamed using the bamboo mold and then topped with different sauces. Very colorful. 🎡Tianjin Eye – 天津之眼 we biked to see the Ferris wheel up close. Waterfront of Hai River －海河畔 we biked and partly walked a big stretch along the river. Lots of people outside enjoying their afternoon. 🌯Tianjin is famous for their Jianbing. Visiting Kaleici around sunset was one of the highlights of our trip to Antalya. If you’re planning to explore this old town, I highly recommend going in the late afternoon and staying through golden hour, the light makes everything feel warmer and more magical. We entered through Hadrian’s Gate, and honestly, it’s worth slowing down there. The Roman architecture is beautifully preserved, and you’ll notice intricate carvings that you might miss if you rush. A tip: take your photos facing inward toward the gate, the lighting from that angle is just ideal. From there, we strolled through the winding, cobblestone alleys of Kaleici, passing by traditional Ottoman style houses and tucked away cafés. What I appreciated most was how peaceful the area felt once we moved a little deeper in, the crowds thinned out, and we could actually hear birds and street musicians in the distance. If you like unique souvenirs, check out the local art and antique shops, but be prepared to bargain politely. The Clock Tower marks a nice central spot to pause, there’s a small plaza nearby with places to grab fresh pomegranate juice (definitely try it. It’s tangy and refreshing). As Norway’s second-largest city, it is easily accessible from other parts of Europe and perfect for a weekend stopover! Here are my recommendations for a short stay in the city: 1️⃣ Bryggen The historical center of Bergen and one of its most iconic landmarks. The colorful row of wooden houses lining the harbor is famous for its architectural and maritime heritage. Inside, you’ll find a mix of museums, handicraft stores, and cafés. 2️⃣ Mount Fløyen Take the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen and indulge in breathtaking views of Bergen below. A return ticket in summer costs 190 Norwegian Kroner (around €17), but I recommend buying a one-way ticket for half the price and walking back down. Besides the viewpoint, there are many hiking trails through birch and pine trees. You’ll also find a lake and a fun ‘troll’ forest for children! Visit at sunset for the best views. 3️⃣ Flåm Railway and Fjords If you’re short on time, the ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ day tour is a great way to sample the wonderful Norwegian scenery. Key highlights include the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway, and a cruise along the Nærøyfjord.
