2025.01.11 Tongariro Alpine Crossing

2025.01.11 Tongariro alpine crossing
Known as one of the top ten scenic one-day walks in the world, the Tongariro Track is approximately 20 kilometers long and is one of the most anticipated attractions in the North Island. (But I can’t find out what the other nine are?)
Before setting off, we applied for a mountain pass online. The DOC in charge also sent us a long letter to remind us of the precautions, warning us that this mountain is not easy to climb, the temperature changes quickly, and we must prepare enough cold-proof clothing and food.
It was cloudy in the morning on the day of departure. We saw a beautiful sunrise on the way. It was very windy on the red crater and the road was very long. Having received training in Taiwan's 100 Peaks, we felt it was easy to walk on and the climbing was not difficult. The only thing to note is that the downhill gravel section after the red crater is very slippery, much slippery than the gravel slope in Nanhu. It is actually not bad to be careful and go down slowly. I fell there twice, but I also saw people slipping, getting injured and bleeding, and even spraining their feet.
The cool thing about this trail is that the scenery changes throughout the whole journey. At the beginning, you walk on the barren land where you can see the volcano, then you come to the volcanic basin. When you see the red crater and the beautiful alpine lake, you think it is really worth walking. When you go downhill, you can also see Lake Taupo in the distance. It’s just that the zigzag downhill feels like you can never finish walking. At the end, you walk into the forest and stream.
It takes about eight hours to walk slowly and take pictures. I suggest staying in the national park because you enter from A and exit from B. You can choose to drive to parking lot B and take the shuttle bus back to A, but I suggest taking the shuttle bus directly from the national park. The round trip is 60 New Zealand dollars, which is the same as the previous shuttle bus, and you don’t have to fight for a parking space early in the morning. When you go down the mountain, you can eat at a restaurant called Schnapps bar that is delicious and has large portions. I still miss the pork ribs. I wrote it down for reference for those who happen to be there.

The most moon-like place on earth ☾!! A must-see sunrise
Indonesian waterfalls + twin volcanoes
Indonesia is made up of over 10,000 islands
Besides bali there are actually many places worth visiting •̀֊•́
This time we flew to Surabaya for a 3 day 2 night Chur burst trip
This includes sleeping 1-2 hours a night and running up the volcano to watch the sunrise without opening your eyes/driving up to 6 hours a day/taking a shower at twelve degrees without hot water/sleeping at the airport and so on
Very "rough skin" but all at once ⌯'o'⌯👇🏻
Take in the twin volcanoes of Sewu, Bromo + Ijen
It became the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen!
🚩 Bromo Volcano Bromo
It is considered one of the three holy mountains of Hinduism
That day we checked into a hotel at the foot of the mountain
Left by jeep at 2am (only slept for 1 hour Z☡zᶻ)
I had a bowl of hot Indonesian noodles and coffee at the mountainside of Jingang Mountain
Walk for about 5 minutes to reach the sunrise viewing spot
The sky without light pollution is full of stars
It feels like the entire galaxy is packed by us ɵ̷̥̥᷅ 𖤋ɵ̷̥̥᷄
From midnight stars to golden sunrise the color of the sky keeps changing
Black, pink, light blue, purple, yellow, orange, blue...
Also super lucky to see comets and meteors ☄️
A distant view of bromo and the surrounding surrounding mountains
Not only was it voted "a must-see sunrise in life" by CNN
It is also the cover of the Indonesian chapter of the travel book "Lonely Planet"✐
After watching the sunrise, we crossed the sand sea and headed straight to the crater
On the way, the driver will find a place to help everyone and the jeep take pictures 🤳
Near the foot of Bromo we started hiking 20-30mins up the mountain
As you climb the 250 steps, you will slowly smell the smell of sulfur
Walk along the edge of the crater and see the rising heat, shocking
Probably the closest moment in your life to an active volcano
Pilgrims can buy "bouquets for prayer" to throw into the crater
To show respect and blessing to the mountain god
I chose to ride a horse on the return trip (I was surrounded by Indonesian guys soliciting business 😂)
The route is rugged It feels like traveling through ancient times The experience is quite special ~
The scenery I saw that day was really crazy!
I feel like I can't go only once in my life (hopefully there will be a sea of clouds and sunrise next time ☁️
* If you are afraid of the cold and do not want to bring thick clothes, you can rent a down jacket at the restaurant for about $10-15hkd
* Depart early to fight for the front row viewing position
* Bromo peak season is July and August, during this time it does not rain and no clouds cover; September and October crowds decrease, is the most suitable time to see the volcano
*Safety is the most important thing

Journey to Mt. ijen: A Sunrise Hike
Our adventure to Mt. Ijen began in the pitch dark of early morning. Equipped with flashlights and gas masks, we embarked on the hike with cautious excitement. Hiking in the dark brought its own challenges, with steep paths that demanded our full attention. We took it slowly, making frequent stops to catch our breath and recalibrate our pace. Each break became a moment to absorb the tranquility of the mountains, even though we couldn’t yet see the full beauty around us.
Reaching the top was a huge relief—a silent celebration shared with our fellow hikers. After a short rest, we set out to explore, only to learn that the famous blue flames area was temporarily closed to visitors. A little disappointing, but we were still in awe of the incredible scenery that awaited us. As dawn broke, we moved to the crater rim, where we were allowed to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the sulfur lake.
The air was crisp, carrying a unique purity that felt like it had been untouched by time. As sunlight crept over the landscape, the turquoise lake at the center of the crater sparkled, wreathed in soft clouds of smoke rising from the sulfur vents. Watching the first light reflect off the lake was nothing short of mesmerizing—a scene we knew would leave an everlasting mark in our memories.
Is Mt. Ijen hike worth it? For me, it is definitely a yes.

Mt. Bromo. A breathtaking adventure on a live volcano
Mount Bromo. Waking up before dawn, travelling in pitch dark on a bumpy jeep ride not knowing where I'm heading too. Braving the cold waiting for the first rays of sunlight pierce through the misty valleys is definitely an unforgettable memory for nature enthusiasts and thrill seekers like me.
The sunrise is not just beautiful; it was charming. The sky blooms in colours, and the sun spills over the clouds with a dash of gold. The view was not just awesome, it was fantastic. No video or picture can truly capture it. You must be here to experience it.

🇮🇩 Hot Spring at Aek Rangat, Lake Toba
Aek Rangat is a well-known hot spring located on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Situated on the western shore of Samosir Island, Aek Rangat offers beautiful views of Lake Toba and the surrounding landscape. The hot springs at Aek Rangat are naturally heated by geothermal activity. The mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties and provide a relaxing experience.
The larger bath house was not open during my visit. The guide brought me to a small restaurant next to it which had a tiny pool with hotspring water. Aek Rangat offers a natural and rustic experience so the facilities are basic. It would be good to bring your own supplies.

🇮🇩 Stay in Traditional Batak house in Hotel Tuk-Tuk Timbul by Lake Toba
During my visit to Samosir Island, I spent two nights in a traditional Batak house. Despite the lack of air conditioning, the nights were comfortably cool. I had expected many mosquitoes but was pleasantly surprised to find very few. Overall, it was a delightful stay.
Ambiance/Facilities:
The room offered basic amenities, without a TV or air conditioning.
Highlights:
The most striking feature was the magnificent view of Lake Toba right at my doorstep. I woke up early to catch the stunning sunrise, which was truly breathtaking.
Value:
The stay was budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice for travelers looking for an affordable option.
Rating: 4/5
One drawback was the absence of a kettle in the room. Instead, the hotel provided a thermos of hot water, which was available for a charge of 15k per bottle.

🇮🇩 Sunrise on Lake Toba @ Samosir Island
Lake Toba is a tranquil haven located in the northern part of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. It spans about 1,145 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 505 meters.
The lake's serene and picturesque setting is complemented by Samosir Island, which lies in the middle of Lake Toba. Samosir Island itself is almost as large as Singapore and is known for its traditional Batak culture, scenic landscapes, and charming villages. During my stay in Samosir Island, I had the chance to experience breathtaking sunrise on the lake right outside my hotel room by the lake.

🇮🇩 From Medan to Lake Toba by Bus
Taking public transport from Medan to Lake Toba may not be the most comfortable and convenient way but it is definitely doable. I took a local bus from Amplas bus terminal in Medan to Parapat. It was a 4 hours ride from Medan to Parapat through winding and narrow roads especially towards the end of the ride. As my hotel was located along the main road, I asked the bus driver to drop me off at my hotel but unfortunately he dropped me at the wrong hotel so I had to walk around 2 km to my hotel. Luckily a kind local gave me a ride on his motorbike.

🇵🇹 Hike to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno
The Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, also known as the Boca do Inferno viewpoint, is a popular tourist spot on São Miguel Island in the Azores. This viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views of the Sete Cidades caldera, renowned for its twin lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. Unlike some other viewpoints on the island, reaching Boca do Inferno requires a 20-minute hike. We parked our car at the Parque Estacionamento Lagoa do Canário and crossed the road to reach the trail entrance. Unfortunately, the weather was not ideal during our visits, and we were unable to get a clear view of the lakes due to heavy mist on both days. Despite this, the hike itself was enjoyable.

🇵🇹 Witness Geothermal Phenomena Up Close!
Jardim Público da Courela is a public garden located in Furnas, a small town in the southeastern part of São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal. This park is known for its geothermal activity, featuring numerous fumaroles—openings in the earth's surface that emit steam and volcanic gases. These fumaroles are part of the larger Furnas Volcano, a significant dormant volcano with a summit subsidence caldera. The park offers visitors a unique experience of witnessing geothermal phenomena up close. One of the main attractions is the tradition of cooking meals in the hot geothermal soil, known as "Cozido das Furnas" (Furnas geo-cook). This method of cooking uses the natural heat from the fumaroles to slowly cook a variety of ingredients, resulting in a delicious and unique dish.

🇵🇹 Strong waves near the islet of Vila Franca! 🌊🌊
We visited a small park near the islet of Vila Franca, located in Vila Franca do Campo, a charming town in the southern part of São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. The islet, less than 1 km from the park, is uninhabited and primarily composed of basalt. It serves as a popular spot for recreational activities such as cliff diving and snorkeling during the summer. The islet features an almost perfectly circular bay with a diameter of 150 meters and is one of the nature reserves in the Azores.
During our visit, the weather was cloudy and rainy. We were awed by the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean!

🇵🇹 On the Road Between Two Lakes
Sete Cidades is an attraction that you will not miss if you visit São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. The Sete Cidades Caldera at the top of Sete Cidades Volcano is the largest freshwater lake in the Azores.
Although hydrologically, the Sete Cidades Caldera is one large crater lake, most refer to it as two separate bodies: Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) and Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake).
We stopped for a while at the bridge that separated the two lakes and marveled at the wonders of nature. The lakes appear to have different colors because they reflect the sunlight in different ways.

Guatemala one of the most underrated country
I spent and amazing 2 weeks in Guatemala. We landed in the capital Guatemala City and only stayed a night there. This is the only capital I’ve ever come across with no positive comments even from the locals. Next morning we took a 45 mins taxi ride to Antigua. A charming colonial town and one of the most beautiful communities in Latin America. Stayed a few nights and from there went to the so called most beautiful lake in the world Lake Antigua. There are many different towns in Lake Antigua and each one has their own unique style but one thing all they have in common is the surrounded by the beautiful lake Atitlan and volcanos. We first did the easier hike to volcano pacaya which took around 3 hours. Rested a few days and challenged another volcanos which is rated as top 10 volcanos in the world, and the no7 most difficult volcano hikes. Volcano Acatenango. Our private tour which cost around 500q (60usd) per person started at 10pm and we finished at 11am. It was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done but once you get to the summit and see that sunrise everything felt worth it.
I highly recommend Guatemala.
I’m currently on a one year vacation in Latin America and already been in this continent for 8 months. Guatemala is my 9th country in Latin America and it’s definitely one of my favourite after Argentina #guatemala #antigua #lakeatitlan #Volcano
🇮🇩 Parhallow Viewpoint overlooking Lake Toba, Samosir Island
We stopped by Parhallow Viewpoint and Coffee Shop for lunch during the tour around Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The viewpoint is about 7 km and 15 min drive from Tomok Ajibata Port. It is a scenic spot and coffee shop which offers breathtaking views of Lake Toba, one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. The restaurant serves simple local delicacies and a variety of beverages, including locally sourced coffee and tea. There was a coffee plant right next to our table which my guide pointed out to me.

🇮🇩 Lakes Within a Lake, Samosir Island
I got the opportunity to visit two lakes within a lake during my tour around Samosir Island. The concept of "lakes within a lake" refers to smaller lakes situated on islands that are themselves located within a larger lake. This unique geographical feature is present in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia, which contains two notable smaller lakes on Samosir Island: Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Natonang. Both lakes are surrounded by lush greenery and offer a tranquil and picturesque setting. The calm waters and natural surroundings provide a perfect spot for relaxation and photography.

Tuktuk Siadong is a small village is located in a small cape in Samosir Island. I arrived in Samosir Island at noon. After checking in to my hotel, I decided to explore Tuk-Tuk on foot since I had no other means of transport. The village was about 2 km from my hotel. There were many hotels in Tuk-Tuk. Some of the hotels facing Lake Toba had private beach and nice views of the lake.

🇮🇩 Ferry Rides between Parapat and Samosir, Lake Toba
There are a few ferry terminals in Parapat offering ferry services to different locations in Samosir Island. The hotel staff dropped me off at the newly built Pelabuhan Ajibata. The new ferry terminal seemed to offer higher-end ferry services to tourists and I was told that there was no ferry available that day. The staff I approached at the new ferry terminal directed me to a small port next to it. That's the port where locals take local ferries to and fro Samosir.
And so I boarded the local ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000). The ferry runs regularly so there is no need to buy tickets in advance. The ferry conductor will collect ticket fees from the passengers one by one.
The ferry looked quite old and rundown but no complaints since the fare was so cheap. There was no air-conditioning too. There were also vendors selling snacks on the ferry.
I sat at the open deck to immerse myself in the beauty of Lake Toba and took lots of pictures! It's definitely an eye-opening experience for me. One should try to take the local ferry instead of the premium ferry for a truly local experience in Lake Toba regions!

🇮🇩 Stay in Parapat by Lake Toba
I spent one night at Gapura Hotel in Parapat, a small town in North Sumatra on the edge of Lake Toba, before taking a ferry to Samosir Island the following day. My hotel room was facing the lake and the view of Lake Toba was priceless.
The hotel is situated along the main road. The view of Lake Toba along the road was amazing! However the road conditions were bad. There was literally no space for pedestrians to walk. I felt quite unsafe walking on the road as I had to walk very close to the edge to avoid being run over by passing vehicles and constantly keep a look out for vehicles behind me. There were many stalls and small restaurants along the main road. Most of them offer a very nice view of Lake Toba and the prices were cheap.

Very excited to see this volcano ! It's the only volcano island in a lake, inside an island, inside a lake, inside an island in the world 🌍.
Wasn't able to go to Volcano Island this time as it has recently erupted and caused bush fires this earlier month. No boats are allowed due to safety restrictions.
But there are stunning views from the ridge above to the north, many restaurants and coffee shops with view platforms to sit and chill.

🌋East Java is amazingly beautiful! 🇮🇩
I enjoyed every bit of this adventure - it was affordable, and the views were absolutely worth the hikes and early starts.
Day 1:
• Madakaripura Waterfall
Stay: Bromo Terrace Hotel & Resto
Eat: Bawangan Bromo Hotel & Resto
Day 2: (started our day at 2.30am)
• Sunrise point at King Kong Hill (only jeeps can access the roads there, and you get some cool pics as well)
• Hike Mt. Bromo
Stay: Urbanview B Syariah Lumajang
Day 3:
• Tumpaksewu Waterfall
• Goa Tetes Cave
Stay: ljen View Hotel & Resort
Day 4: (started our day at 11.30pm the PREVIOUS day, slept at 6pm to make it to ljen before sunrise)
• Hike Mt. Ijen - there's the option to hike down to see a naturally occuring blue fire, but there were too many people on that day, making the narrow path down quite dangerous. We opted to climb a little higher to catch the sunrise instead - it was so beautiful and serene with most of the crowd trying to catch the blue fire.
