Chapel Bridge is located in Lucerne, Switzerland. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. When it was first built, it was 270 meters long. However, because the riverbank has been breaking down over the centuries, the bridge is now 204.7 meters long. There are many paintings along the bridge that were painted in the 17th century. #summervacay Mount Rigi, somehow a lesser-known gem near Lucerne, was like a deep breath that I realized I never knew I needed. I rode a cogwheel train to the top (which was enough on its own!), but as I arrived on top I found myself resting on soft clouds floating under me, and mountain peaks towering above. The view was like, no joke, wow. I walked quietly along trails, threw on some layers to sit down with a warm drink, and frankly just enjoyed doing nothing at all. It wasn't about crossing items off a list, instead it was about feeling calm, feeling present, and feeling far away from all the noise of everything else. These powerful symbols offer a moment for reflection and a glimpse into global diplomacy. 🚤 Afternoon Delight: Lake Geneva Cruise: The highlight of the day was definitely the Lake Geneva boat cruise in the afternoon. The views from the water were truly stunning, with the city's elegant architecture and the majestic Alps in the distance creating a breathtaking panorama. My cruise wrapped up around 5 PM, and I headed back to the hotel feeling completely refreshed by the lakeside beauty. 🏨 Accommodation & Seamless Travel: I stayed at a hotel near the airport, which proved super convenient. The hotel provided a complimentary Geneva transport card, making it easy to get around the city all day without worrying about tickets. In the evening, I purchased a Friends Day Pass for Youth for my journey to Interlaken. This allowed me to leave my luggage at the hotel during the day, pick it up before departing for Interlaken, and then head straight to Geneva Airport train station for my onward journey. #summervacay Standing on Gornergrat with the Matterhorn right in front of me was honestly surreal. Just the train ride up was a dream, with panoramic views of glacial rivers, valleys and snow-capped mountains all around. At the top, you walk out walled in by 29 alpine giants and the air is definitely thin enough there to hit differently. I couldn't stop looking at the Matterhorn, it was so sharp, so iconic and, in real life, so impressive. It was freezing but peaceful and I felt, in a way, like I was floating above the earth. I imagine you could easily spend the day and never tire of taking in the views. If you're ever in Zermatt, don't skip Gornergrat. Lausanne, Switzerland Nothing exciting happened in 2020, right? Two months before things went pop, I headed out to the city of Lausanne which is situated on the banks of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. This was my second day trip flying into Switzerland and this trip is situated slap bang in the middle of my Swiss Trilogy. The idea of trilogies excites me - after all, I am a statistics nerd, and to make statistics out of travelling - what more could you want! 😉 That aside, Lausanne is a vibrant city. But have you ever combined travel with a sporting event? When I booked this day trip to Lausanne, I immediately started searching what there was to do in Lausanne in January 2020. Little did I know that the Winter Youth Olympic Games were being held in the city right when I had booked my trip! After a quick search on the official website for the Winter Youth Olympics, I had tickets in my bag for the Ice Hockey finals. And the best thing - they were free! I’ve never watched Ice Hockey before. But the event was brilliant! I was captivated and it added an extra element to my trip that I hadn’t considered or enjoyed before. Next time you take a holiday or a trip abroad, check to see what events are on in the local area. #summervacay I visited Lugano once in winter, years ago — and even then, I fell in love with this quiet and charming little town. 🕊️ But in early summer, Lugano is on another level. The colors are richer, the skies brighter, and everything feels so alive. ☀️💐 As part of my “Escape from Milan” plan 😂, Lugano easily became my favorite stop. 🚆 Just over an hour from Milano Centrale, I arrived at the dreamy Lugano Paradiso Station — yes, it's literally called Paradiso! 🎢 Right next to the station is the Monte San Salvatore funicular. Head to the top and you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Lugano — absolutely worth it. 🏞️ Coming down, I recommend walking back to town along the lakeside. It’s one of the most beautiful and peaceful walks I’ve had — glistening water, swans, cozy benches, and mountain views. 🥐 Thanks to its proximity to Italy, the food here is surprisingly good too — very Italian-Swiss fusion. I happened to visit on Ascension Day, so many shops were closed... but I still had such a lovely, slow-paced day. 📍 To return to Milan, the main Lugano train station is uphill in the city center — a short walk or bus ride away. Switzerland never disappoints, but if you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard, spend a couple of days exploring Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen — two of the most breathtaking places in the Bernese Alps. We based ourselves in Grindelwald, a lively alpine village nestled beneath the towering north face of the Eiger. From here, we hiked to Bachalpsee — an easy-to-moderate trail starting from First (you can take a cable car up), where the lake reflects snow-capped peaks like a mirror. Unforgettable. Then came Lauterbrunnen, often called “the valley of 72 waterfalls” — and it truly feels like a dream. We strolled through the valley floor, surrounded by vertical cliffs and cascading waterfalls, especially the famous Staubbach Falls, which plunges nearly 300 meters straight down. Every angle is camera-worthy. If you're looking for an unforgettable hiking experience in Switzerland beyond the crowds of Zermatt or Interlaken, Appenzell is a true hidden gem. Nestled in the northeast, this charming region offers dramatic landscapes, traditional Swiss culture, and some of the most scenic trails I’ve ever walked. We started our hike from Wasserauen, making our way up to the crystal-clear Seealpsee lake — a perfect mirror surrounded by jagged cliffs and green pastures. After a short break by the lake, we hiked further up to the iconic Berggasthaus Äscher, the cliffside guesthouse that looks like it’s carved right into the mountain wall. The view? Simply jaw-dropping. Instead of taking the cable car, we did the full loop: climbing up and hiking all the way down through Ebenalp. It was a rewarding 4–5 hour hike, filled with alpine flowers, curious cows, and panoramic views at every turn. Here, I took a look at the stunning Cathedrale Saint-Pierre and the oldest residential building in Geneva - a Building that dates back well over 700-years. Take a three-hour train ride from Zurich to reach the idyllic town of Disentis, a true "Swiss mountain retreat" with incredibly fresh air! The town is home to the 500-year-old Kloster Disentis monastery, which not only preserves its historical interior design but also offers accommodations for visitors 🤩 The rooms feature simple wooden furniture, including just a bed, a bathroom, and a desk with a wooden chair. Only basic amenities like a toothbrush and soap are provided, embodying the monastery's minimalist charm. The monastery hotel also serves breakfast, with ingredients sourced directly from the farm behind the monastery! Freshly baked croissants are unlimited, along with cheese and ham—eat as much as you like! The cheese has a rich, creamy flavor that pairs perfectly with the croissants 😌 After breakfast, the deputy abbot leads a tour: surprisingly, there's an international school next to the monastery, and the deputy abbot is also the principal! The tour includes a visit to a 500-year-old underground passage and the still-operational main chapel, which is awe-inspiring in its grandeur 😌 Before leaving, you can stop by the gift shop at the entrance to purchase monastery-made wheat biscuits.
