Choosing Serenity: Lugu Lake and the Timeless Charm of Li Ge Peninsula
#discoverchina #lugulake
After days of travel, we chose Lugu Lake as our retreat—a place where time slows and the water mirrors the sky. Our first stop was Li Ge Peninsula, often called the soul of Lugu Lake. Most guesthouses sat just steps from the shore, and within minutes of dropping our bags, we were by the water. The off-season meant few crowds, but the beauty was undiminished:traditional wooden "pig-trough boats"dotted the lake, their reflections blending with the sapphire expanse.
Walking further, we explored the peninsula itself, now lined with shuttered inns and cafés—closed to protect the lake from pollution. The commitment to preserving Lugu’s purity moved us; perhaps this is why its waters remain so startlingly clear. On the way back, a narrow uphill path led us to the Li Ge Viewing Platform.Though the climb required care (no handrails, just steep steps), the reward was the iconic postcard vista:the peninsula curled like an emerald ribbon against the lake. No mirror-like reflections under the midday sun, but the scene was still a masterpiece of nature, proof that Lugu’s charm needs no filter.

As the day winds down, the lake transforms into a serene paradise. The golden sunrise dances across the water, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It’s the perfect moment to pause, breathe, and soak in the beauty of this tranquil haven.

Kayaking on Lugu Lake: Exploring the Waters in a Traditional Mosuo Pig Trough Boat
#kayak #100waysoftravel #yunnan #lugulake #luguhu #travelchina
One of the must-do activities at Lugu Lake is to kayak or take a traditional boat tour. Nestled on the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, Lugu Lake is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, breathtaking mountainous backdrop, and cultural significance as the home of the Mosuo people, a minor ethnic group. The boats used on the lake are called pig trough boats, named for their resemblance to long pig troughs. These sturdy vessels are carved from openwork logs with sharpened ends, a unique tradition of the Mosuo people. While paddling in one of these boats can be challenging due to the heavy wooden paddles, the serene atmosphere of the lake makes the effort worthwhile. We visited in April and, unfortunately, missed the blooming season for 水性杨花 (aquatic poplar flowers), a special floating plant that graces the lake’s surface during the right time of year. Despite that, we enjoyed leisurely paddling across the tranquil water, taking in the picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. As the lake is quite expansive, we grew tired, and eventually, the boat master took over, guiding us back to shore. The entire experience was unforgettable, immersing us in the peaceful beauty of Lugu Lake and the Mosuo culture.

Even the bus ride from Lijiang to Lugu lake is eye-candy
The bus trip from Lijiang to Lugu lake is around four hours and we completely expected it to be another boring trip where we sit for four hours bored out of our mind. But just the scenery along the way feels like an attraction on its own. The entertaining bus driver is a local from Sichuan and he sings while making jokes all the time. The trip was just too entertaining. The bus even stopped twice at locations that are perfect for photography and where there is plenty of food snacks, and time for restroom breaks. #lijiang #lugulake #bus #scenic
A Serene Escape to Lugu Lake, Lijiang
Nestled between the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, Lugu Lake is a breathtaking gem surrounded by misty mountains and crystal-clear waters. My journey to this remote paradise felt like stepping into a dream, where time slowed and nature reigned supreme.
Upon arrival, the deep blue lake stretched endlessly, reflecting the sky like a flawless mirror. A boat ride on a traditional Mosuo wooden canoe led me to Liwubi Island, where prayer flags fluttered in the wind near an ancient temple. The tranquility was overwhelming, broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the boat.
Exploring the lakeside villages, I encountered the Mosuo people, known for their matriarchal society and warm hospitality. Walking along Luoshui Village, I savored grilled fish and butter tea while listening to tales of the "Kingdom of Women." At sunset, the golden light painted the lake in hues of orange and pink, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
As night fell, I joined a bonfire dance with locals, laughing and swaying under a sky glittering with stars. Lugu Lake was more than a destination—it was a journey into serenity, culture, and the untouched beauty of nature. I left with my heart full and my mind at peace.

I recentl
I recently visited Daloshu (大洛树), a charming village near Lugu Lake, and the experience was truly unforgettable. I started my day with a pleasant hike up to the Daloshu Mountain peak. The trail was accessible and offered stunning panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The hike was manageable and the view from the top was well worth every step.
Afterward, I took a relaxing boat tour that sailed to an island on the lake. The boat ride was serene, providing additional scenic viewpoints of the island and the lake's expansive beauty. On the island, I enjoyed a small picnic and marveled at the tranquil environment. The combination of natural beauty and the peaceful boat ride made for a perfect afternoon. This experience was a wonderful way to immerse myself in the unique landscapes and serene atmosphere of Lugu Lake.
