🇮🇩Things to Know About Silent Day (Nyepi) in Bali
I’m currently in Bali, counting down just 9 hours until everything shuts down for Nyepi (Silent Day) on 29 March, 2025, at 6am. This unique cultural and religious observance brings the entire island to a complete standstill.
.
What Happens on Nyepi?
.
The entire island shuts down – including the airport, businesses, and transportation.
.
No one is allowed outdoors, whether locals or tourists. You must remain in your home or hotel.
.
No lights, no internet, no activities – everything is paused for 24 hours.
.
Mobile and internet connections are cut off, so be prepared to be offline.
.
The Day Before Nyepi (28 March, 2025)
.
You can witness the Ogoh-Ogoh parade, where giant statues are displayed and later burned in a ritual to ward off evil spirits. Every area in Bali has a designated place for this.
.
Traffic can get extremely congested near Ogoh-Ogoh parade locations, and many taxis won’t operate in these areas. Plan your return route carefully.
.
Even though Nyepi officially starts on March 29, businesses and restaurants may start closing earlier on March 28, so prepare your food and essentials in advance.
.
You might notice a strong smell of smoke in the streets starting the day before Nyepi due to various prayer rituals. If you're sensitive to smoke, wearing a mask is recommended. Just a heads-up—you may even smell it inside your hotel or villa room.
.
Important Tips for Tourists
.
Check if places you want to visit on March 28 are open, as schedules may differ.
.
If you miss stocking up on food, some hotels may offer in-room dining, but only at set times. Check with your hotel in advance.
.
The island-wide shutdown lasts from 29th March, 6am, to 30th March, 6am, so plan accordingly.
.
Nyepi is a rare and deeply spiritual experience. If you’re in Bali during this time, embrace the stillness, reflect, and enjoy this once-a-year moment of complete peace. Well, we don't often get times to rest from online and phones, this is a special day you can do so.
