Floating torii gate of Miyajima Island
Miyajima is located near Hiroshima, requiring less than 30 min by train, followed by a 10-min ferry ride. It is a very beautiful island that is worth visiting, and it would be preferable to stay one night on the island.
I would recommend the following attractions on the island:
Itsukushima Shrine, which is famous for its distinctive floating torii gate. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most iconic images of traditional Japan. This a torii gate like no other in Japan, and is a great photo taking spot.
Mount Misen is the highest peak on the island, and is 535m high. I took the 2-way ropeway (2,000 yen/pax) up and down the mountain, though there is a hiking option as well. Even with the ropeway, there is a 30-min climb to the summit, which is well worth the hike due to the amazing views from the top.
Miyajima is famous for its oysters and eels. We had lunch at Mametanuki, which serves affordable lunch sets at around 3,000 yen each.

Take a ferry and see the Otorii from the sea of Miyajima
#Miyajima (#miyajima / #宮島) arrived at Hiroden Miyajimaguchi Station, which took about an hour by JR train from Hiroshima. If you cross the crosswalk from there, you will see the JR Nishi-shi Miyajima Ferry Pier right across. If you take the ferry from there, you can see #Itsukushima Shrine (#itsukushima) and the large #torii (#大鳥居) from the sea. The contrast between the green mountains in the background and the red torii caught my eye.

one of the must visit places in Japan - Itsukushima Shrine
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on Miyajima Island which is near Hiroshima. It is best known for its big floating torii gate .
Miyajima can be reached by ferry from Hiroshima or from Miyajimaguchi- which is faster. after getting off at Miyajima guchi train station, simply walk toward the ferry pier. On the weekend there is often a large crowd so following them would likely lead you to the ferry terminal.
There are two ferry companies running ferries between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima; the JR ferry and the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen. Both have large passenger ferries and costs ¥360 round trip for the 10 minutes ride. there are four ferries per hour between 8-6pm, and less frequent schedules in the early and evening hours.
After arriving to the island, turn right and walk for 10-15 minutes to reach the shrine. Weekends are particularly busy with tourists so getting there early would help.
There are also many deer roaming around so beware of not feeding them with food- they will follow you!
It is best to reserve 4-5 hours to leisurely walk around the Shrine and the island. if you have time , a few more hours would be even better to walk further, and enjoy a lunch or tea , or even grilled oysters!
