Izumo Taisha – Ancient Spiritual Heart of Japan
#cityplaybook

Post:
Stepping into Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest and most sacred Shinto shrines, feels like entering a realm where history, myth, and nature intertwine. Located in Shimane Prefecture, this shrine is dedicated to Okuninushi-no-Okami, the deity of marriage and good relationships, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across Japan.
The shrine’s massive, gracefully curved wooden structure stands proudly against the backdrop of towering cedar trees and serene gardens. I was awestruck by the colossal shimenawa (sacred rope) hanging over the entrance—said to be one of the largest in Japan, symbolizing the boundary between the sacred and the mundane.
Walking the peaceful grounds, I felt the timeless spirituality that has made Izumo Taisha a center of worship for centuries. Nearby, the quaint town invites you to explore local crafts, warm hospitality, and traditional cuisine.
Best Time to Visit:
October and November during the annual Kamiari Festival, when it’s believed all the gods across Japan gather here.
Helpful Tips:
Respect shrine etiquette: bow before entering, avoid taking photos inside main halls.
Visit early morning or late afternoon for quieter moments.
Explore nearby Inasa Beach, said to be a place where gods descend from the sea.
Location: Izumo Taisha, Shimane Prefecture, Japan

Pray for Love at the Poetic Nonomiya Shrine
The Nonomiya-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine. Because of its nature as a native faith in Japan, it differs quite significantly from the elaborate temples of Arashiyama, both in terms of its history and its ambience. Yet, as a Shinto shrine, the Nonomiya-jinja Shrine had a very specific and unique role in imperial history as well.
The Nonomiya Shrine comes from the Heian period. It served as the venue of a religious practice in antiquity, “successive imperial princesses stayed in the Nonomiya Shrine for a year or more to purify themselves before becoming representatives of the imperial family at the Ise Shrine in Mie prefecture.” (Wikipedia on Nonomiya Shrine). These imperial priestesses were called Saigu. At the time of founding, the Nonomiya Shrine served Princess Ninshi, a daughter of Emperor Saga, who served as Saigu from 809 to 903 A.D. at Ise Jingu, which was the most important shrine in the country.
As Saigu, the princess carried out rituals and offerings, and I assume that meant she was the religious ambassador to pray on behalf of her country.
In classic 11th century Japanese literature, the Tale of Genji, which is said by some to be the world’s first novel, has a chapter set in the Nomomiya Shrine. The plot involves the love story between Prince Genji and Lady Rokujo. Lady Rokujo accompanied her daughter to the shrine for purification rites, and as she met her lover Prince Genji here, they bid farewell by the moonlight in this beautiful setting amidst the bamboo woods in Arashiyama.

Address: 3-5-12 Shibuya, Tokyo 250-0002, Japan 🇯🇵
Konno Hachimagu Shrine is located in Shibuya, Tokyo. The deity enshrined here is the 15th Emperor Ojin, also known as Hachiman Daibosatsu. It is said that this shrine is famous for blessings for traffic safety, fertility, and success in life. There is a red gate called Shinmon, and the colorful shrine building is decorated with beautiful tigers, dragons, and more, making it a fascinating place to visit. Next to the shrine office is the Kinno Hachiman Shrine Treasure Museum, which exhibits cultural properties that give a sense of the history of the area.

The best daytrip from Hiroshima
#100waysoftravel
It is highly likely that somewhere on the internet you've seen a pic of the Tori gate in the water and wondered or even wanted to see it in person. Let me tell you that famous floating gate happens to be on the Miyajima island. While mostly famous for the shinto shrine Itsukushima. Miyajima makes for a wonderful day trip from Hiroshima.
I have visited it several times in the past and I continue to as the ferry ride comes complimentary on my transport pass. This famous shrine is a UNESCO heritage and one of the most clicked of places in Japan.
The friendly deer are another fascinating inhabitants of this island. They tend to be subjects of many pictures. Once you have explored the shrine area you may take a cable car up to the peak of Mount Misen for breath-taking ocean views and cheeky monkey encounters.

Yasaka-jinja Shrine
The Yasaka-jinja shrine is a Shinto shrine dating back to the year 656. Despite its age, the buildings and the grounds were very well maintained. We followed recommendations to visit at night because the weather was cooler and there were few people, and the shrine is beautifully lit up. It is also near the Gion district which is buzzing with shops, restaurants, and bars, so we grabbed a nice bowl of ramen nearby afterwards.

Follow the Red Gates
One of the most iconic Shinto shrines in Kyoto is the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of torii gates. We were surprised at just how large the area is and how long the trails are - we spent over two hours hiking up and down the hills, following the bright red gates and passing by many small shrines. We arrived late in the afternoon and were lucky to catch the sun setting over Kyoto at a lookout point on the hill.

Exploring Nara With Adorable Deers - Nara Park
Nara Park is an absolute gem! The adorable and friendly deer roaming freely gives the place a unique charm. Feeding them is a delightful experience. The cute deers were the most polite wildlife we've ever encountered, so it's a given that we should be polite too when visiting their home.
The park's surroundings boast incredible temples like Todaiji, with its awe-inspiring Great Buddha statue. There's also Kokufu-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and other interesting sites surrounding the deer park.
Exploring the park and these historic temples is a perfect way to immerse yourself in Nara's rich history and natural beauty. It's a must-visit for anyone traveling to Japan! 🦌🏯
