A Day with Trains & Tradition in Izumo
#cityplaybook
Izumo, a city known for its spiritual energy, also has a special charm for train lovers. Here, the rhythm of local trains and the calmness of historic shrines come together in the loveliest way.
I started my journey at the beautifully preserved Former Taisha Station. With its wooden structure and vintage design, it feels like stepping back in time.
Then I visited the nearby Izumotaisha-Mae Station, where the charming red train adds a pop of color to the peaceful surroundings.
Of course, no visit to Izumo is complete without a stop at Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s most important and beloved shrines. Surrounded by tall pines and sacred air, it’s the perfect place to pause and reflect.
Why I recommend Izumo for a rail day:
・You get to enjoy a mix of nostalgia and nature, all at a slow, relaxing pace
・The area blends quiet train stations with one of Japan’s most powerful spiritual spots

A Weekend in Izumo – Shrines, Stories & a Stay with Soul
#cityplaybook
There’s something deeply peaceful about Izumo. As one of Japan’s most sacred destinations, it invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with something timeless.
At the heart of it all is Izumo Taisha, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. Surrounded by towering trees and soft silence, it feels like stepping into another world. Whether you’re here to make a wish or simply admire the architecture, it leaves an impression.
For this trip, I stayed at NIPPONIA Izumo Taisha Monzenmachi, a beautifully restored machiya-style inn just steps from the shrine. Think traditional charm with modern comfort—sliding doors, warm wood, and thoughtful touches everywhere. Waking up in such a calm space made the whole trip feel extra special.
Why I recommend Izumo for a weekend:
・It’s a perfect escape into Japanese mythology, nature, and tradition
・Staying near the shrine lets you feel the rhythm of the town—slow, sacred, and serene

GARB CLIFF TERRACE IZUMO: A Perfect Terrace Dining Experience in Izumo
#celebrateit
I recently visited GARB CLIFF TERRACE IZUMO, and it was such a refreshing experience! The terrace offers a stunning view and a relaxed, open atmosphere that feels like you’re dining in a foreign country. The vibes are fantastic, making it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a meal.
I ordered the fried shrimp and croquette lunch, and I loved how crispy and light the batter was on both the shrimp and the croquette. The textures were just right! For dessert, I had a cherry pie, which had a lovely combination of crispy dough and rich custard filling. It was the perfect sweet ending to a satisfying meal. I also tried their Izumo tea, which was refreshing and added a nice touch to the meal.
Why I Recommend GARB CLIFF TERRACE IZUMO:
1. Delicious Fried Shrimp and Croquette – The perfectly crispy and light batter made the shrimp and croquette a standout dish.
2. Stunning Terrace with a Great View – The open atmosphere and beautiful view of the surroundings make dining here feel like a vacation abroad.
If you’re ever in Izumo, definitely stop by GARB CLIFF TERRACE IZUMO for a meal with a view.

Izumo Ikebukuro Izakaya
Hidden in the winding alleys near Ikebukuro JR Station in Tokyo is a mouth-watering eel restaurant called Izumo.
Smoking is allowed in this restaurant, so there is a sign at the door saying "No entry for persons under 20 years old" But don't worry, as long as you arrive before 3pm every day, the restaurant welcomes families with children to enjoy the delicious food. The owner is very friendly and will gladly answer any questions you may have.
Although Izumo restaurant has a limited number of seats, they are spread over two floors. Guests can use QR codes to order food, and the ordering system has Chinese translation, so that diners from outside can also enjoy the food without worries. The restaurant’s menu is full of delicious dishes, but the one you can’t miss is their signature Unagi Donburi! The eel in this dish is grilled to a crispy outside and tender inside, with a fragrant aroma. The eel sauce seeps into every inch of the meat during the grilling process. The thick and substantial tamagoyaki, paired with the fragrant sauce, is very appetizing.
In addition, there is also an eel bowl set meal, although the portion is slightly smaller, it is equally delicious and worth a try. Surprisingly, there is a unique snack on the menu - horse tongue, which tastes just fine but also has its own unique flavor.
