Locals Know Best: Must-Try Fried Fish at Ming Xin Coffee Shop (Kampung Valdor)
My recent food adventure took me to Kampung Valdor, a charming village just 30 minutes away. I'd heard rave reviews about the legendary fried 松鱼(snakehead fish) at Ming Xin Coffee Shop (明新茶室), and I couldn't wait to try it for myself.
This dish is a true culinary masterpiece. The 松鱼is marinated with galangal, which removes any muddy taste, and then deep-fried to absolute perfection. The result? A crispy, golden-brown delight that's bursting with flavor. I ordered a portion (perfect for sharing!) along with a plate of char ta pan and a comforting bowl of fish porridge.
The fish was incredible - fragrant, perfectly fried, and seasoned just right. But Ming Xin Coffee Shop (明新茶室) offers more than just amazing fish. While waiting for my food, I saw other tables enjoying plates of laksa, and after chatting with some friendly locals, I learned the coffee shop is also known for its herbal teas.
If you're a food lover seeking an authentic taste of Kampung Valdor, this is a must-visit! Be prepared for a bit of a wait, as this place is popular with locals. Trust me, it's worth it!

Fu Lin Coffeeshop Clementi
There are several stalls in Fu Lin Coffeeshop, such as Wei Zhen Xiang Mixed Economic Rice and Bee Hoon, Ha Ha Popiah, Yi Sheng Roasted Delights and Hokkien Mee. Among all, the most popular one is Economic Rice. It typically consists of steamed white rice served with a variety of dishes, including meat, vegetables, and sauces. The dishes served with the rice can vary depending on the vendor, but common options include chicken, pork, tofu, and various types of vegetables such as stir-fried cabbage, carrots, and beans. Yummy Fong Hup Koka Noodles
This stall is located in the Detian Coffee Shop at Bukit Merah. I like their Tomyum Koka Noodle. It tastes really good. The noodles were springy and chewy, not overly cooked. The soup was rich and flavourful. Their meats were nicely marinated and fresh. Their Mee Hun Kueh is nice too. The portion was small. It is open 24 hours, a good option for late night supper. Weekdays lunch time got a lot of invisible queue (takeaway order). You may need to wait a while for the food to be served.

Uncle Sam Hainanese Curry Rice
This is a hidden gem in the Bukit Merah neighborhood area. We call this stall Uncle Sam Curry Rice, as it is operated by this uncle alone. He manages the cooking, selling and servicing all by himself without any helper. I wonder how early he wakes up everyday. I like his pork chop, char siu, and stir-fry cabbage the most. Payment wise, you just put the money in the container and change yourself. Uncle Sam believes in the honesty of his customers.

🌟Kin Men Seng Heng (Halal) حلال🌟
Address - 7 Maxwell Road, #02-133, Amoy Street Food Centre, Singapore 069111
Ambiance/Facilities - Kin Men Seng Heng is located on the second floor of the famed Amoy Street Food Centre. It’s a spacious place to dine at, but lunch hours typically draw plenty of office workers and tourists. Go early if you want to secure seats easily.
Highlights - Duck 🦆 Rice Set ($6), Duck 🦆 with Yellow Noodles 🍜 and Soup ($4) and HALAL!!!!
Avg. Price per Person - SGD15
Rating - 7.5/10
Amoy Street Food Centre is a two-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. There are only three mains you can order at Kin Men Seng Heng. Each of them features slices of the stall’s signature duck 🦆 , but with different types of carbs: there’s rice 🍚 , yellow noodles, and kway teow. These cost $4 on their own, but you can upgrade to the set that costs $6, which includes tau pok, tau kwa, and braised egg 🥚 .
Anyway, we started with the Duck 🦆 Rice 🍚 Set ($6).
It goes without saying that the duck 🦆 itself is the most important component of duck rice 🍚 as the duck 🦆 meat itself had a flavourful braising taste 👅.
After trying Kin Men Seng Heng’s braised duck 🦆 with plain white rice, we wanted to see how it’d fare with Yellow Noodles and Soup ($4). The soup, which was in equal parts herby and peppery, surprised me with how delicious it was.
Overall, I enjoyed the flavours of Kin Men Seng Heng’s dishes. I enjoyed the duck’s delicious braising and the wonderful herbal soup, but was slightly let down by the somewhat tough meat. It’s still worth a shot, though, especially since there aren’t many such stalls that are also halal-certified.

Chicken Rice and Bean Sprouts ?
An unusual combination of chicken rice and bean sprouts with a side of in house hand made fish balls.
Chicken rice is typically served with green vegetables like Kai Lan, but here in Ipoh it is typical to have it with a side of tauge or bean sprouts. The bean sprouts are grown in the area around Ipoh and are fresh and taste very different from those in other parts of Malaysia or Singapore.
Blanched and then lightly seasoned with an oil and soy sauce mix, the bean sprouts are sweet, salty and crunchy yet doesn't overwhelm you with it's own flavour. The chicken is all kampong chicken which is slightly more gamey than regular chicken but complements well with the oily chicken rice.

I can't be
I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet because this is my go-to resto! I can't say anything bad about the food and the price because the dishes are unbelievably cheap (less than 200 pesos), the servings are unbelievably generous (2 can eat a single meal if they are not that hungry), and the taste is unbelievably authentic (reminiscent of my Singapore and Malaysia food trip). #hawkerfood

Recommended food spots in Singapore: Newton Food Center
After the United Nations 🇺🇳 UNESCO listed Singapore’s hawker culture on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the local tourism bureau recommended many good places to eat. Newton Food Center is one of the famous food attractions. The Hollywood movie "Crazy Asia" The "Regal" attraction is also here. There are more than a hundred food stalls in the center, with a wide range of varieties, such as seafood stir-fries, freshly squeezed juices, skewers, noodles, etc. The pepper crab and manta ray that the famous Hong Kong artist Nicholas Tse ate in the food show "Twelve Flavors" are also products from stall 70 here. Alexander Village Food Centre
It is located just next to IKEA Alexander. There are a lot of popular stalls, like Mr. Avocado, must try their Avocado Juice and Durian Shake, taste heavenly! The Zhang Ji Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao Dumplings Noodles is one of the best I have eaten so far in Singapore. You can buy frozen dumplings and cook at home. If you like Cantonese soup, go for Michelin Star Zhen Zhi Wei Hong Kong Yummy Soup. Desserts stalls like AJ Muffins and T-Rex’s Soufflé pancakes also a must try.
Ah Seng Durian is just at the opposite road. After the meal you may head up to Ah Seng to enjoy the durian ice cream, coffee or desserts.

Heritage hawker noodles
Address - Eng's Wantan Noodle Restaurant, Great World Shopping Centre, 1 Kim Seng Promenade, B1-K122/123, Singapore 237994
With a rich heritage that lasted 68 years, Eng's Wantan Noodle initially started out at the Tanjong Katong area as a humble hawker stall serving noodles. They were known for their spicy chilli sauce and QQ texture of their noodles, which is a tradition that continues to be passed down till today.
Now, they have expanded to have 9 outlets all across Singapore so that more people can easily enjoy their yummy food! On top of that, it remains affordable.

We Singaporeans love our Malaysian food and it was a joy when Malaysia Chiak! Food Centre was opened here at Great World Shopping Centre! This place specializes in specifically Malaysian cuisine that we all know and love, including chilli ban mee and Penang carrot cake. Super tasty!
My suggestion is to try and get seats on the outer section along the sides so that when it gets crowded, you don’t pushed or squeezed up against by people walking past.

Yummy Pao Fan in Singapore!
Got to try Chef Wai’s Poached Rice recently and have to say that their new beef short ribs sliced pao fan got me pretty impressed 😁
What we had
🍲 Emperor Mixed Seafood Pao Fan, $11.90
🍲 Beef Short Ribs Sliced Pao Fan, $9.90 (NEW)
🍚 Kolo Rice, $2
Emperor Mixed Seafood Pao Fan 🍲🦐
If you are not sure which seafood to get for your pao fan, get this bowl as it has everything 😉 Fresh prawns, scallops, fried fish and crunchy handmade prawn balls. Their seafood broth has a sweet taste from the cabbage and I like that it’s not salty so you can definitely finish drinking the soup 😁 and of course, the pao fan comes with generous amount of crispy rice and egg floss for that extra crunch
Beef Short Ribs Sliced Pao Fan 🍲🥩 (NEW) ⭐️
New on the menu. Comes with a choice of original soup base or pickled cabbage soup base. I picked the latter to try 😁 and it was a great choice. First sip of the soup tasted peppery because they used mala oil on the soup. It has a slight mala effect on the throat but nothing unbearable 😊 Soon after, the soup quickly became addictive for me. It’s really appetizing and flavourful. If you want to try something different than the usual seafood broth, try this! The broth is not too salty and the beef shabu slices are soft and tender too
Also worth to note that the pao fan remained warm even after we spent some time taking photos 😛
Kolo Rice 🍚
We also tried a bowl of kolo rice which is seasoned with their special sauce. Pretty flavourful with dark soy sauce? and pork lard taste. Comes with similar garnishes as the pao fan. Try it if you haven’t!

Makansutra Gluttons Bay is a open-air food court that is dedicated to serving authentic, delicious Singaporean heritage dishes! It has been operating since 2005 and is a local favourite haunt for good food and good vibes.
It is located right next to the iconic Esplanade theatre, which is great for a before or after show dinner. However, do note that because it is open-air, rainy weather might put a downer on your plans. There are other indoor restaurants in the area so they can be alternatives if this happens.

Nice Dry Ban Mian at Tai Seng 🍜
Visited this newly opened Ban Mian stall at Tai Seng’s Wang De Fu Kopitiam and tried some of their specialties
What I had
🍜 Dry Ban Mian, $5.50
🍜 U Mian Soup, $5
🥟 Steamed Dumplings, $5 (for 6 pcs)
🥟 Fried Dumplings, $5 (for 6 pcs)
Dry Ban Mian 🍜
Asked to have some chilli for this and it does give a slight kick which I enjoyed 😋 The handmade ban mian is smooth and pretty well coated with flavourful sauce. Also comes with crispy ikan bilis, egg and chicken bits. Never really had chicken with ban mian before and it’s good coz the meat is tender 😁
U Mian Soup 🍜
Picked U mian for the soup version. The first sip of the soup got me surprised at how flavourful it was 🤤 The soup is made with chicken bone and pork bone. There’s also the addition of cabbages and shredded carrots to add that natural sweetness to the soup. Like the dry ban mian, the soup version also uses minced chicken meat instead of pork. I personally like it coz it’s more tender and less ‘dry’ than the usual minced pork
Dumplings 🥟
Their dumplings are generously packed with minced chicken meat and some shredded carrots. The carrots also add some crunch and texture to the fillings. Between the 2, I prefer the fried dumplings coz the skin is pretty crispy
If you are working nearby or staying nearby, do give them a try! I wouldn’t mind having this for lunch again if I’m in the area ☺️

What we had
🍝 Truffle Cheesewheel Pasta, $14
🍕 Pizza Margherita, $12 for 12”
🥩 Steak Tagliata, $16
🧆 Arancini, $7
Truffle Cheesewheel Pasta 🍝
Their signature dish ⭐️ Tagliatelle pasta with a bechamel sauce base, mixed in the cheese wheel (swipe for video), and topped with grana padano shavings and truffle paste. Definitely for cheese & truffle lovers 🧀 as the cheese fragrance is strong and well complemented by the strong truffle taste!
Pizza Margherita 🍕
Another one of their specialty dishes. Comes in 2 sizes, 9” ($8) or 12” ($12). Freshly made and the crust is relatively crispy 😋 Comes with a pomodoro base and generous amount of mozarella 🧀
Steak Tagliata 🥩
Rib-eye steak sliced and served on a bed of arugula with cherry tomatoes, topped with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The beef slices are thick and sufficiently tender for most of them tho we prefer some seasoning on the beef itself
Arancini 🧆
Deep-fried risotto balls and a gooey mozarella centre with some spice, coated with bread crumbs, and served on a bed of arugula, with a side of pomodoro sauce. Makes a good appetizer! 😁

This may not seem like the typical environment for exploring Singapore’s history but actually it is all captured in the food! Hawkers have been a huge part of Singapore’s heritage, so much so that the government is actively seeking to preserve this culture.
Here, you can find the famous branches of Singapore’s hawker food from all over the country, from Eunos to Beach Road to Hill Street. Longest or Shortest Queue?
.
At the hawker, do you go for the stall with the longest queue or the shortest? Usually, I choose the shortest, but today, with no real appetite, I decided to delay dinner by joining the longest line.
.
At the end of my wait? A bowl of Ginseng Chicken Soup, scooped straight from a gigantic pot. The whole chicken sat intact in the bowl—yet with just a little stir, it shredded beautifully into the broth. Simple, hearty, and surprisingly appetizing.
.
Even as I ate, the queue just kept growing. I overheard people talking about their Black Chicken Soup being a MUST-TRY and honestly, the variety of soups they offer is impressive.
.
If you're a soup lover and live in the East, this place is definitely worth checking out! Would you wait in a long queue for a good bowl of soup? 🍲
