Ethical way to experience elephants 🐘
#animalcontact
Knysna Elephant Park is a renowned wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the care and conservation of elephants. Established in 1994, it was the first facility in South Africa to house elephants in a controlled, free-range environment.
One of the main attractions is the opportunity to join a guided tour where you can walk alongside the elephants.
Visitors can participate in feeding sessions, where you can offer fruits and vegetables to the elephants. This is was a my favorite activity 🥰
Visiting Tips:
Book in Advance: While the park accommodates walk-in visitors, booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Respect the Elephants: Always follow the guidance of park staff when interacting with the elephants to ensure both your safety and the well-being of the animals.
Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking in natural terrain.
📍Where: located near Knysna in the Western Cape of South Africa 🇿🇦

🐘 Our Family Visit to Mae Sa Elephant Camp – Joy, Reflection & Questions
We spent a half-day at Mae Sa Elephant Camp (now renamed The Chang) just outside Chiang Mai, and the experience was both lively and thought-provoking.
We loved how up-close we could get with the elephants. The kids got to feed them, and we watched them bathe in the river and roam around. Walking beside these gentle giants in such a lush setting was incredible. There was also a short program explaining elephant anatomy and traditional care practices. We helped make herbal nutrition balls and learned about the shift the camp is making away from elephant shows and rides toward more ethical interactions.
The setting itself was scenic, with well-shaded paths and a natural river running through. The staff were warm and knowledgeable, and it didn’t feel too touristy. The experience felt meaningful for the kids—they learned about conservation and animal welfare in a very hands-on way.
Still, we couldn’t help but reflect on the bigger picture. Some parts of the camp still appear to offer limited performances, depending on the area and timing, so it’s important to ask what’s included before visiting. As a family, we chose to stick to feeding and observing, which felt more aligned with supporting responsible tourism.
If you’re traveling with kids and want a personal, educational encounter with elephants, Mae Sa can be memorable—just go in with awareness and focus on the activities that prioritize the animals’ well-being.

🐘 Morning Trumpets & Mud Baths – Life at Chai Lai Orchid 🌿
One of the absolute highlights of our trip: staying at Chai Lai Orchid near Chiang Mai. It’s more than just a place to sleep – it’s a sanctuary where rescued elephants roam freely, and guests get to be part of their world for a little while.
Waking up to elephants wandering past your balcony is a surreal and beautiful thing. They even pop by at breakfast – gently (and sometimes not-so-gently!) reminding you they’d like a banana or two.
We got to bathe the elephants in the river, which was as joyful and muddy as it sounds – such a calm, grounding experience. And the star of the show? A 5-month-old baby elephant, already cheeky, full of energy, and unbelievably strong. He kept headbutting us like a playful puppy that doesn’t know its own strength. Absolutely hilarious – and unforgettable.
Chai Lai is doing amazing work for both elephants and the local community. If you’re in northern Thailand and want an experience that’s ethical, heartwarming and wildly fun – go. You won’t forget it.
