Erhai Park, located on the northern side of Dali City, is a lakeside park adjacent to Yunnan's largest inland lake—Erhai Lake. You can take the Three Pagodas Line and get off at Longshan Hotel. The first stop of Erhai Park is the main gate with a grand archway. There are also second and third stops within the park, with most visitors choosing to get off at the second stop, which offers better views. From there, it's just a 100-meter walk to the park. Inside the park, there is an oval-shaped hill known locally as "Tuan Mountain" due to its shape. This hill was once the site where the Nanzhao King raised deer. A walk to the summit offers a panoramic view of Erhai Lake and a bird's-eye view of the cityscape.

Located in the southern part of Dali, Weishan County is home to Weishan Ancient Town, which served as the early capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom and was a key city along the ancient Tea Horse Road. The town boasts well-preserved architecture and numerous historical relics with southwestern characteristics, earning it the nickname "Museum of the Nanzhao Kingdom." The main attractions include old buildings such as Gongchen Tower, Xinggong Tower, Beishe Academy, Dengjue Temple, Weishan Confucian Temple, and Xuanzhu Temple, each with its own unique charm. Compared to the bustling Dali Ancient Town, Weishan Ancient Town offers a quieter and more serene atmosphere, perfect for leisurely strolls and exploring its streets and alleys. The town is also famous for its local snacks and delicacies. Highlights include fried dough sticks with soy milk, handmade noodles like Ba Rou Er Si and Guo Jiang Er Si, which are renowned local specialties. Other must-try treats include Yi Gen Mian, red snow pears, green bean cakes, and Weishan candied fruits, all of which are incredibly delicious.

On Erhai Lake in Dali, there is a tiny island with a diameter of only 200 meters, known as "Mist-shrouded Putuo," one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Erhai. On clear days, you can gaze at Xiaoputuo Island from afar, where a small island and pavilion stand amidst the water, with the backdrop of Cangshan Mountain, Erhai Lake, blue skies, and white clouds creating a stunningly picturesque scene. The island features only one structure, the Guanyin Pavilion, originally built during the Ming Dynasty and later renovated in 1982. The pavilion has two floors: the first floor houses a statue of Buddha, while the second floor is dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. To visit the island, you must take a boat to reach it. Xiaoputuo Island resembles a miniature bonsai magnified hundreds of times, surrounded by rocky hills and breathtaking scenery. Every year, migratory black-headed gulls flock to the area, soaring above the lake, creating a magnificent sight.

Shuanglang Ancient Town is a narrow town located on the northeastern shore of Erhai Lake, directly facing Cangshan Mountain. The town is lined with unique guesthouses and restaurants along the coast, making it an ideal spot for photography and sightseeing. The ancient town is connected by a 3-kilometer-long Ethnic Culture Street, featuring numerous specialty shops, restaurants, and creative boutiques, perfect for leisurely exploration. If you get tired, you can spend 10 RMB to take an electric cart for a convenient ride. Every ancient town in Yunnan has a traditional opera stage, and Shuanglang Ancient Town is no exception. Its old opera stage hosts performances by opera troupes from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year, while on regular days, it serves as a gathering place for villagers to play cards and socialize. For those who want to enjoy the lake, head to the southernmost part of the town to Haijie Street, where the clear and expansive Erhai Lake awaits. You can also take a boat trip to Yuji Island or Nanshao Style Island for a half-day excursion.

Nanzhao Folk Island, a poetic name, is a small limestone island by Erhai Lake. Taking a ferry to the island gives a vibe similar to Sun Moon Lake. The island is not large, and there aren't many attractions, so you can explore it in about an hour. On the island, there is a 17.56-meter-tall white marble Guanyin statue, along with various uniquely styled inns that are quite beautiful. Other attractions include Lock Dragon Cave, Pastoral Flower Pavilion, Dragon Ditch, Nine Springs Reflection, Snow Joy Pavilion, Yu Gui Lake, Layered Waterfall, Moon Gazing Pavilion, and Snail Ancestor Stone. The island also features a man-made beach, which is a great spot to view Erhai Lake. Many people come here to take wedding photos.

Located on the eastern edge of Erhai Lake near Xizhou Ancient Town, there is a prominent peninsula that is actually a green sandbar about one kilometer long and wide. Its shape resembles a jade hairpin inserted into the shimmering waters of Erhai Lake, and locals call it 'Haitong.' Haitong is a hidden gem with few tourists, offering stunning scenery of blue skies, white clouds, lush greenery, and clear waters, accompanied by water birds. It provides a sense of immersion in nature, and the photos taken here are as beautiful as paintings. Although the lakeside can be quite windy, strolling along the shore is incredibly relaxing and therapeutic.

Yunnan is home to many ancient towns, some with a long history, while others are newly constructed on old sites. The "Yi Ethnic Ancient Town" in Chuxiong City, Yunnan, is one such example. Located by the Longchuan River, this town was built near the site of the Song Dynasty's "Dejiang City" ruins. It serves as a cultural tourism destination that combines displays of Yi ethnic residences and tourism. Wangugu Tower is a loft with flying eaves and upturned corners. It has a total of 13 upturned corners, which symbolize the thirteen peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The building is decorated with 2,300 auspicious patterns such as stars and the moon, symbolizing the 23 ethnic groups in Lijiang. There are a total of 9,999 dragon decorative carvings, and if you add one dragon to the caisson on the roof, it will become a magnificent sight of thousands of dragons that will last forever. Located at the "Yulong Pass," one of the three major passes in Lijiang Basin, Guanyin Gorge is considered the first critical fortress on the Yunnan-Tibet route of the Tea Horse Road. The first half of the scenic area showcases cultural experiences, including Naxi-style architecture, while the second half, accessible after a thrilling cable slide, features more primitive natural landscapes. The area also offers various man-made attractions, such as a glass walkway, electric slides, jungle adventures, a water park, and the nerve-wracking "Step by Step Thrill," providing visitors with an adrenaline-pumping experience.

Because the local area belongs to Danxia landform, the cracks of the red sandstone on the mountain are like tortoise shells. From different angles, it looks like a lion, an elephant or a bell, hence the name "Shibao Mountain". It is the largest and relatively well-preserved group of caves in Yunnan. There are 16 caves with reliefs and 139 statues in the Shibao Mountain and Shizhong Mountain areas. This is a sculpture art handed down from the Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom periods, with a history of more than 1,000 years, and has a strong local flavor and Bai ethnic style. There are eight grottoes in Shibaoshan: Cave 1: Picture of Yi Mouxun, the sixth king of Nanzhao, discussing state affairs. Cave 2: A picture of the fifth king of Nanzhao, Geluofeng, going on tour. Don't be deceived by its modest exterior—step inside, and you'll be amazed by its stunning interior! The bookstore is a repurposed old granary, while the adjacent Poetry Tower was once a tobacco drying building. Both structures retain their original architectural elements but have been redesigned. The exterior resembles a tall farmhouse warehouse with rammed earth walls, while the interior boasts elegant and refined design. Bookshelves stretch from the floor to the ceiling, creating a full wall of books complemented by wooden structures, which are the bookstore's signature features. Next to the bookstore, the Poetry Drum Tower offers a resting area where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea while gazing at the gray-tiled rooftops outside the window, exuding a simple and natural charm. In addition to books, the bookstore also sells cultural and creative products, making it a perfect place to relax and explore.

The Heihui River flows through Shaxi Ancient Town, and the Yujin Bridge spanning the river has become a vital passage for entering and exiting the town. Don't underestimate this elegantly curved stone arch bridge—it carries a significant historical legacy! Yujin Bridge was first built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has endured collapses and the ravages of war, being destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. At the apex of the arch, there is a stone carving of a turtle head gazing over the upper reaches of the Heihui River, while the other side features a turtle tail carving connecting to the lower reaches of the Heizhan River. At the ends of the bridge's railings, you'll find four stone sculptures of Chinese giant salamanders. For generations, the Bai ethnic people living in Shaxi have used this bridge as a crucial route to their fields and for trade. It bears the weight of Shaxi Ancient Town's rich history. Today, with modern roads providing access, Yujin Bridge has become a popular spot for tourists to take photos and enjoy its unique charm.

Yunnan is home to many ancient towns, and nestled between Lijiang and Dali, where the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nu Rivers converge, lies the charming "Shaxi Ancient Town." Though small in scale, Shaxi has gained popularity as a tourist destination thanks to its picturesque setting featured in the TV drama "Meet Yourself." The town is now bustling with visitors. Shaxi is a historic town that once thrived as an important stop on the Tea Horse Road. Today, the ancient town retains its unique local architecture, including well-preserved horse inns where caravans once rested. Some of these inns have been converted into guesthouses, offering travelers the unique experience of staying in century-old buildings. The town is compact, and you can explore it in just one or two hours. However, if you have more time, it’s highly recommended to stay overnight. Stroll along the old streets, take in the tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the busier Dali Ancient Town, and savor the local cuisine.

I recently traveled to Shangri-La, Yunnan, and visited the Buddhist holy place, Bala Gezong - Bala Zhuoma Lhakhang Temple. I was moved by the sacred atmosphere here, and I would like to share a little about it here. During this visit to Balazhuoma Lakang Temple, I was fortunate to receive the blessing of the monk abbot, who carefully explained to me in detail the precious collections and Buddhist culture in the temple. 🌸Immersive experience of Tibetan Buddhist culture The Bala Drolma Lhakhang Temple has two floors, which house the White Tara, Green Tara, 108 Buddha statues, and the only three precious Buddhist scriptures left in the country, all of which make people feel the profound heritage of Buddhist culture. What’s more special is that the temple also provides scripture samples and pigments, which are prepared by monks for believers. Believers can experience hand-copied scriptures and thangka painting, and feel the charm of Tibetan Buddhism firsthand. When chatting with the owner of the B&B, I learned that Bala Gezong is a scenic spot developed in recent years. Although Balamakang Temple is located in the scenic spot, the outsourced business practices occasionally make tourists dissatisfied. The monks felt helpless but could do nothing. The host made an exception and allowed me to take photos, hoping that through my sharing, more people will understand the beauty and culture of Balazhuoma Lhakhang Temple. Stayed at Indigo Lugu Lake Hotel and chose to dine at the hotel's neighborhood restaurant. The moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was captivated by the design style. The decor showcases modern artistic techniques, yet cleverly integrates Chinese and Yunnan-Burmese cultural elements. It's very beautiful! The dishes mainly feature Yunnan-Burmese flavors, such as lamb chops, char siu, pork belly, thick soup, pot soup, and rice noodles. The taste was decent, and the three of us had a satisfying meal. Yunnan-Burmese cuisine is characterized by its freshness, light fragrance, moderate sourness and spiciness, and emphasis on the original taste and flavor. The restaurant did a good job in this regard, showcasing the distinctive features of the ethnic minority cuisine.

Hyatt's Jinmao Purelax Lijiang hotel in Lijiang Old Town is backed by the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, offering magnificent mountain views from the balcony. The hotel itself is a highlight, combining traditional architecture with modern design, exuding a classic charm. The novel and fashionable modern architecture blends with the natural landscape, and it is surrounded by mountains and water, with picturesque scenery. Hotel Indigo excels in incorporating local characteristics into its design. The Mosuo decorative ornaments of Lugu Lake in the lobby are quite distinctive, giving the novel and modern hotel a more cultural and artistic atmosphere. In particular, there is a lake in front, surrounded by covered bridges on the side, and the snow-capped mountains in the back, which is quite beautiful. The room we stayed in was a top-level room, which was 40 square meters in size. It had brightly colored carpets and Mosuo cultural bedside murals. With its excellent location, it is a great accommodation choice for your first stop in Lijiang. I stayed in a superior king room, which was spacious at 30 square meters. The decor is soft and elegant, making the stay quite comfortable. The key point is that the room rate is affordable, with a weekday night costing less than 2,000 TWD. Rooms with a view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are only 300 TWD more, offering great value for money. The overall design of Atour Hotel leans towards a modern minimalist style with bright and vibrant colors. The public area also has a self-service washing machine, which is quite practical. However, since we were moving to Lugu Lake the next day, we didn't have the chance to use it.

Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La, meaning 'Moonlight City' in Tibetan, is located in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. With a history of over 1300 years, this ancient town was an important post on the Ancient Tea Horse Road and a treasure of Tibetan culture. After a winter snowfall, the town is draped in silver, resembling an ink painting, serene and mysterious, as if time has stood still. The snow-covered ancient town is like a silent poem. The snow-covered rooftops, the Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the wind, every corner is filled with stories. Standing on Daguishan Mountain, overlooking this moonlight city, a surge of inexplicable emotion fills the heart.
