Wimpole Estate in Spring: A Whitsun Escape into Blooming Beauty
#cityplaybook
There’s no better time to visit Wimpole Estate than during the Whitsun bank holiday, when spring wraps the grounds in a soft, colourful hush. Set in the gentle Cambridgeshire countryside, this National Trust treasure combines grandeur with pastoral charm — and in late May, it’s at its loveliest.
Walking through the estate, I was greeted by flowering wisteria curling along red-brick walls, vibrant borders humming with bees, and fields stretching into hazy green distance. The Walled Garden was in full celebration — bursts of alliums, peonies, and forget-me-nots soaking in the sun. Each path felt like a quiet invitation to slow down and look closer.
The house, with its neoclassical symmetry and rich interiors, speaks of centuries of change — from aristocratic roots to working farm. I loved the balance here: one moment, I was admiring gilded ceilings; the next, watching lambs tumble across meadows.
A short walk from the house led to Wimpole Home Farm, where rare breed animals and heritage farming methods delighted families and kids — a living storybook of English rural life. And beyond, the Capability Brown-designed parkland opened up into sweeping views and quiet picnic spots.
Best time to visit: Late May to early June, when the estate bursts into late spring colour and longer days invite unhurried exploration.
Getting there: Located near Arrington, Cambridgeshire, Wimpole is best accessed by car, with good facilities and on-site café options.
Tip: Arrive early on bank holidays for a quieter stroll and bring binoculars — the estate is also a haven for birds and butterflies.

Biddulph Grange Garden – A Global Adventure in One Enchanted Garden
#cityplaybook
I spent a magical afternoon exploring Biddulph Grange Garden in Biddulph, Staffordshire — and it honestly felt like walking through a living storybook. This incredible Victorian garden, lovingly restored and maintained by the National Trust, is a true hidden gem for garden lovers and adventurers alike.
Created by James Bateman in the 19th century, the garden takes you on a journey around the world without ever leaving England. One moment you're in the exotic Chinese Garden, complete with a red pagoda and tranquil pool, and the next you're stepping through an Egyptian temple guarded by stone sphinxes. There’s even a Himalayan Glen and a serene Italian terrace bursting with seasonal color.
What I loved most was the sense of discovery. Each area is tucked away behind rock tunnels, hidden doors, and dramatic planting — you never know what you're about to stumble upon. It’s whimsical, immersive, and absolutely inspiring.
Spring and early summer are perfect times to visit, with the rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom. I also caught the famous Dahlia Walk, which is an explosion of vibrant color in late summer to early autumn.
Whether you're a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or just someone looking for a peaceful escape, Biddulph Grange will not disappoint. Make sure to stop by the Camellia House Tea Room — it's the perfect way to end your garden wanderings.
Location: Biddulph Grange Garden, Grange Road, Biddulph, Staffordshire, ST8 7SD

Our Trip to Stourhead in Bloom: A Dreamy Springtime Escape
#cityplaybook
Visiting Stourhead in spring is like stepping into a painting. The landscape garden bursts to life with blooming rhododendrons, azaleas, and magnolias, each adding their own brushstroke of color to this already magnificent estate. Our recent trip left us speechless—inspired, refreshed, and utterly enchanted.
What mattered most to us was how peaceful everything felt. There’s something magical about standing at the edge of the iconic lake, looking across to the Pantheon and Temple of Apollo, framed by the soft pinks and purples of flowering trees. The garden paths wind gently through groves and across classical stone bridges, offering new surprises at every turn. It’s not just a walk—it’s an experience, a journey through both nature and art.
The best time to visit Stourhead is mid to late May, when the gardens are at peak bloom. We were lucky enough to catch it just in time—the air was scented with blossoms, and the light played beautifully across the water. Early morning is the sweet spot: fewer crowds, softer light, and more chances to see the local wildlife, like swans gliding across the lake.
Don’t forget to stop by the Gothic Cottage for a cozy cup of tea, and if you have time, take the uphill path to the Temple of Apollo for panoramic views. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a camera, and pack a picnic—you'll want to linger.
Location: Stourhead, National Trust, Wiltshire, England
This trip was a gentle reminder of how beauty and serenity are often found in nature's details—if you slow down enough to notice them.
