The Black Eggs Of Owakudani de Japan.
Owakudani 大涌谷
This area is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Hakone due to its volcanic activity and striking scenic views—you can even catch an amazing view of Mt. Fuji on a clear day. Due to volcanic gases, the area is sometimes closed, so check before you go.
Visitors can witness the bubbling hot springs and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Ashi. Additionally, Owakudani is famous for its black eggs, boiled in the hot springs and said to add seven years to one's life.
Owakudani's Black Eggs
These eggs are cooked in natural spring water for 60 minutes at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. They are then steamed at 100 degrees for 15 minutes in steel baskets. The water that they are boiled in contains sulfur and iron, thus giving the shells their unique color.
Kurotamago (black egg) is a delicacy that can only be eaten in Owakudani. It is a black boiled egg, just as the name suggests. Iron sticks to the shell of a raw egg, boiled in the hot springs at eighty degrees Celsius for 1 hour.
How to Get There:
take a train from Shinjuku Station to Ōwakudani via Hakone-Yumoto, Gora, Gōra, and Sōunzan in around 2h 50m. Alternatively, Odakyu Highway Bus operates a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal to Hakone Togendai every 4 hours.
