I paid a visit to the Shui Yuet Palace of Mong Kok. Seated besdies the Tung Wah College Mong Kok Campus, the Shui Yuet Palace has a distinctive appearance with its red colored walls and green roof tiles. You cannot miss it when you pass by its current location in Mong Kok’s Shantung Street. The resident deity of the Shui Yuet Palace is Kwun Yam (kuanyin or guanyin), who, both in its Hinduism origin as Avalokitesvara and in its adapated form in Chinese folk religion, embodies the spirit of mercy and compassion. The full name of the deity is Kwun Sai Yam, and it means the “perception of all the world’s sounds.” A Kwun Yam believer told me that as Kwun Yam hears all sounds, but you must actually say your wish out loud so that she hears you (perhaps unlike the silent prayers that Christians do). In most Kwun Yam statues in China the figure of the deity sits or stands upon a lotus platform. The lotus is therefore a signature of Kwun Yam. Shui Yuet Palace (in Chinese it means the Palace of Water and Moon) was originally known as Tai Shek Ku Temple (meaning big stone drum). It has existed since the 10th year of Guangxu’s Reign during the Qing Dynasty, and that is the year 1884. Originally, believers of Hakka origin living in Kowloon raised the funds for the construction of this temple, then built at the intersection of Argyle Street and Waterloo Road. Due to development needs, the Hong Kong Government decided to build a motorway (Prince Edward Road) to link up Kowloon City and Mong Kok. It negotiated with the residents of Kowloon for a relocation of this temple to its current site. In 1927, the temple reopened its doors to worshippers. By now, this temple has stood at its current location for 94 years already. It is well-deserving as a historic and cultural relic. There are a few things of historical significance inside this temple. The brass bell bears the date of 10th year of the Guangxu Reign. The Lin Fa temple, meaning the “Temple of Lotus,” was likely built in the 2nd year in the Tongzhi Reign of the Qing dynasty (1863). When it was built, the Lin Fa Temple had the hill as its backdrop while facing the sea. In those times, the now-Tung Lo Wan Road was the actual coastline facing the sea. In terms of Feng Shui, this was meant to bode well. Right next to the Lin Fa Temple was the old Tai Hang Village (more below). Kwun Yam (the Goddess of Mercy) is the resident deity at the Lin Fa Temple. The Lin Fa Temple is also the first Kwun Yam temple in Hong Kong island. It was said that the Lin Fa Temple belonged to one Tsang family, but eventually the temple was handed over to the Chinese Temples Committee in 1975. When I first saw the temple, I became immediately intrigued by its unique appearance. Its top is in an octagonal shape (it is actually a half octagon because it is built with the hill at its back). Unlike pretty much all other temples in Hong Kong, the Lin Fa Temple was built with entry ways on the two sides. A half-moon shaped stone rail girdles the central opening, which, in the old times, would have faced the sea. The roof is a double-eaves-tented roof, and the front hall is connected with the main hall without a courtyard, unlike the usual two-hall format with side chambers in most temples. The temple has two stories, and there are stairs within the temple to reach the upper altar. Traditionally, the people of Tai Hang celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival by holding the Fire Dragon dance parade during the three days of the festival. The Fire Dragon originated from a time of plague during the 19th century. A village elder said that Kwun Yam (the resident deity in Tai Hang’s Lin Fa Temple), gave him the revelation that a fire dragon dance will drive away the plague. Wat Huay Pla Kang serenely sits on a mountain top surrounded by verdant green hills in the heart of Chiang Rai. It is a pretty impressive site to behold from far away it gets more interesting as you come closer. Just like all the other unusual temples in Northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Rai, Wat Huay Pla Kang was designed by a true visionary, which explains its unusual stylistic and structural choices. It began as a small monk office designed by a monk named Phra Ajarn Phob Chok, and grew over 4 years into the temple that you see today. A rumour says that anyone who prays at the temple will receive good health or money as a blessing. The breathtaking temple is a fusion of international influences with palpable attention to craft, detail, and Buddhist devotion. Wat Huay Pla Kang is known for its unique architecture, built in Chinese-Lanna style with white walls. Nearly all other temples in the region are built in traditional Thai or Thai-Lanna style, while Wat Huay Pla Kang blends Lanna and Chinese elements so thoroughly that the temple is really nothing like either. The elements of Chinese architecture shine through in the color scheme, boasting bright hues of red, yellow, gold or green The pagoda is a towering 9 stories tall, with a pyramid shape instead of the round or square structure found in Thai or Chinese pagodas. The top tier is bell-shaped like a traditional Thai Chedi. Instead of the naga serpents one might expect, a pair of Chinese dragons guard the stairs to the inside of the structure. One of the main attractions of this extraordinary temple is actually the enormous Guan Yin statue…. Construction started in 1891, Kek Lok Si Temple of Penang is one of the largest temples complexes in Southeast Asia, expansion has continued since then. With millions of images of Buddha and hundreds of beautiful cravings, sculptures and murals in the complex, Kek Lok Si Temple is not just a religious site but also an unique heritage treasure. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy. In 1930, the seven-storey main pagoda of the temple, the "Ban Po Thar" (萬佛塔, "Pagoda of the Ten Thousand Buddhas"), a 30-metre-high (98 ft) structure, was completed. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown (spiral dome); reflecting the temple's amalgam of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. It represents syncretism of the ethnic and religious diversity in the country. King Rama VI of Thailand laid the foundation for the pagoda, so it is also named "Rama Pagoda". In 2002, a 30.2-metre (99 ft) bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy, was completed and opened to the public. The statue is complemented with a 60.9 metres (200 ft) three-tiered roof pavilion (with 16 columns made of bronze supporting the pavilion), which was completed in 2009. It is the tallest Guanyin statue in the world. One hundred statues of the goddess Kuan Yin, each of 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) height, are set around the main statue of the goddess.
