Concordia Sagittaria 🇮🇹
#traveldiaries
I recently explored the charming town of Concordia Sagittaria in Italy, and it was a delightful experience! 🇮🇹 Nestled between the bustling cities of Venice and Treviso, this hidden gem is rich in history and culture. The entrance to the archaeological site, which showcases Roman ruins, is around €5, and it’s worth every cent to see the beautifully preserved mosaics and ancient artifacts.
I wandered through the quaint streets, admiring the blend of historical architecture and modern life. The stunning Cathedral of Concordia is a must-visit, with its beautiful frescoes and serene atmosphere. I also enjoyed a leisurely meal at a local trattoria, savoring delicious regional dishes. Carthage, located near modern-day Tunis in Tunisia, is one of the most famous ancient cities in history.
Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC, Carthage grew into a powerful and wealthy city-state, becoming a dominant force in the Mediterranean.
It is best known for its conflicts with the Roman Republic during the Punic Wars, particularly under the leadership of the Carthaginian general Hannibal.
Today, the ruins of ancient Carthage are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Roman ruins and Art
After two nights in Aix en Provence, my next destination was Arles. I hadn't read up or researched it. But during a conversation with someone at the hostel. It was pointed out that numerous famous artists including the likes of Vang Gogh and Picasso had taken residence in Arles at some point of time in their life. Infact, in the case of Van Gogh, it was even said to be his most productive time.
Having heard of such a thing. I was very curious about Arles now. In the past many years, I keep coming across someone working on their france itinerary and asking me if they should do Arles or Aix en Provence. Now that i have done both these places. I'd say both are worth, I mean if you can stretch two more nights. Do the other place too. No doubt Aix and Provence is the biggest but i thought in terms of sights, activities and things to do, Arles seemed to have a longer list. Anywho, worst case a day trip is what it definitely deserves.
I managed to visit most of the Roman ruins sights in Arles. You might wanna consider atleast the Roman amphitheater, the baths of Constantine, st trophime cloister, the Roman theater and the mediaeval graveyard. The Place de la Republique is the main square in Arles. Surrounding the square you’ll find many shops and cafes, as well as the Saint-Trophime church and the town hall. Lastly the van gogh cafe and and the foundation van gogh museum come recommended.

A trip to the ancients 🗺️
#ancientbuildings
Exploring the ancient city of Ephesus during my summer vacation was absolutely unforgettable! 🌟 Located near the modern town of Selçuk in Turkey, Ephesus is a sprawling archaeological site that offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient Roman life. The entrance fee is about €12, which is quite reasonable for such a well-preserved and expansive site.
Walking through the ruins, you’ll see incredible structures like the Library of Celsus, the Grand Theatre, and the Temple of Artemis. Each site is stunning in its own right, and the sheer scale of the ancient city is awe-inspiring. The Library of Celsus, in particular, is a highlight with its beautifully restored facade. 📜🏛️
After wandering through Ephesus, I headed over to the nearby House of the Virgin Mary, a serene and spiritual site nestled in the hills. Selçuk also offers charming cafes and shops where you can enjoy a relaxing meal or pick up some local souvenirs.
Overall, Ephesus is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and ancient architecture. It’s a remarkable journey back in time that you won’t want to miss!

The Colosseum: Echoes of Rome's Eternal Glory
There’s something indescribably powerful about standing inside the Colosseum. It’s not just the size—though the sheer scale of this ancient amphitheater is jaw-dropping—it’s the weight of history that really hits you. Walking through the arches, I could almost hear the roar of the crowd, the clash of swords, and the heartbeat of an empire that once ruled the world. This place isn’t just stone and ruins; it’s a storybook carved into time.
What mattered most to me wasn’t just the grandeur, but the feeling of connection—to history, to humanity, to the thousands who once sat in the same spot. I imagined the thrill of ancient Romans watching gladiators, the drama, the politics behind every fight. I paused often, soaking it all in, letting my imagination run wild. Every corridor felt like a portal.

Tunisia’s Hidden Gem: The Amphitheatre of El Jem
If you think the Colosseum in Rome is impressive, wait until you step through the columns into the amphitheatre of El Jem. Just over an hours louage journey south from Sousse, this ancient Roman marvel is stunningly well-preserved and, best of all, almost empty. Without the usual tourists you’d expect at a site like this, you can wander through the grand arches, stand in the center of the arena, and feel history echo around you in total solitude. Not only that, but the basement floors have even been preserved so you can wander beneath where animals of the past were once held.
