Itinerary 1. Takachiho Gorge Start the day early as it’s almost 2 hours drive from Kumamoto. Book the row boats online in advance as slots sell out early on site. Car parking space is also limited near the boating station. 2. Takachiho Shrine A sacred shrine that keeps ancient myth alive with nightly kagura dance. 3. Amanoiwato Shrine Catch the tour to get a glimpse of the ancient cave mentioned in Kojiki, Japan’s creation mythology. The short tour is conducted solely in Japanese, photography is not allowed in the sacred viewing area. The stone pile cave is a short 10 mins hike from behind the shrine. 4. Lunch Enjoy a lunch of local Miyazaki beef. 5. Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine A mystical shrine made popular by Hotarubi no Mori e, it has lesser visitors being off the public transport grid.
